CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina head volleyball coach
Steve Loeswick announced the addition of three student-athletes to the Chanticleers' program for the Spring 2026 semester, as Jonna Spohn, Natalie Hughes, and Hattie Welker have signed to continue their collegiate careers in Conway.
"We're thrilled to welcome Natalie, Jonna, and Hattie to Coastal this spring," Chanticleers' head coach
Steve Loeswick said. "Each of them brings experience, competitiveness, and a high volleyball IQ that will immediately raise the level of our gym. Getting them on campus early allows us to build chemistry, establish standards, and accelerate their impact, heading into the fall.
"Their size, defensive toughness, and championship-level backgrounds give us a strong foundation as we move forward, and we're confident they'll make an immediate and lasting impact on our program."
Hughes, a 6-foot-3 right-side hitter from McKinney, Texas, joins the Chanticleers after playing at San Diego State. She played in 61 matches and 211 sets during her three seasons with the Aztecs, recording 282 kills and 137 total blocks. A graduate of McKinney North High School, Hughes earned AVCA All-America honors as a senior. She amassed more than 1,100 kills during her prep career and set an all-time school record with 353 total blocks.
"Natalie brings size, physicality, and a proven scoring presence on the right side," Loeswick said. "At 6-foot-3, she creates match-up problems and adds a dynamic element to our offense. Her experience and competitive edge will allow her to step in right away, and we expect her to be a difference-maker on both sides of the ball."
A 5-foot-5 libero/defensive specialist from Delaware, Ohio, Spohn was a three-year letterwinner at the University of Maryland, playing in 85 matches and collecting 347 digs. A product of Olentangy High School, she was an AVCA All-American, Ohio Capital Conference Player of the Year, and a First Team All-State selection by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. She completed her prep career with more than 1,300 digs.
"Jonna raises the standard defensively," Loeswick said. "Competing in the Big Ten for three seasons has prepared her to play at a high level every day. She brings elite ball control, toughness, and a fearless mentality that will stabilize our backcourt and elevate everyone around her."
Welker, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Sunbury, Ohio, comes to Coastal Carolina after spending the previous two seasons at Eastern Michigan. She was named to the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman Team in 2024, setting a school freshman record with 99 blocks. As a sophomore, she totaled 138 blocks and completed her stint at EMU with 237 blocks. Welker also accumulated 365 kills in 195 sets played. A graduate of Big Walnut High School, she led her team to a pair of conference championships.
"Hattie is a proven middle with size, athleticism, and great instincts at the net," Loeswick said. "Her ability to block and score in the middle gives us an immediate presence, and we believe she has the tools to develop into one of the top middles in our conference."
The three student-athletes are enrolled at Coastal Carolina for the Spring 2026 semester and are participating in offseason workouts.
