CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina's volleyball team had its home-opener spoiled Tuesday afternoon, as it dropped a close match to UNC Asheville, 3-1.
Adrienne Moore registered 17 kills and Kelly Budnik added 16 to lead the attack for the Lady Bulldogs, who improve to 2-9 overall on the season, and 2-1 in Big South Conference play. The Lady Chanticleers drop their conference opener for the second straight season, falling to 2-9 overall.
UNCA jumped out quickly to win game one 30-22, but Coastal's high-flying duo of Sarah Bennett and Katie Knutson came alive as the Lady Chants cruised to a 30-16 win in game two. The Lady Bulldogs again dominated early in the third game, leading 19-7 before Bennett led the charge back, scoring nine straight points before eventually falling 30-20. UNCA ended the match with a decisive 30-23 decision in game four.
Bennett led the match with an astounding 27 kills, while Knutson added 20. The rest of the team, however, only had 18 kills, with a combined .092 hitting percentage.
The Lady Chants will be on the road this weekend, traveling to High Point on Friday, Sept. 28 and Elon on Saturday Sept. 29. They return home next Tuesday, Oct.2 when they host Winthrop.
