Women's Basketball Falls To Elon, 65-55

Holly Andrews netted a game-high 23 points and Jayme Chikos recorded a double-double as Elon out-slugged Coastal Carolina 65-55 Monday night at Alumni Gym to claim a first-ever 4-0 start in Big South Conference action.

Chikos' double-double, her first of the season, consisted of 10 points and 11 assists. Announced as the Wingate Inn/Big South Player of the Week earlier in the day, Chikos notched her career-high assist total for the second time this season and for the third time during her career.

The Phoenix (8-8 overall) soared to an early 6-0 advantage with 17:58 to play in the first half. After the Chanticleers (6-9, 2-3) evened the count at 8-8 at the 15:27 mark, Elon outscored Coastal Carolina 29-17 throughout the rest of the opening stanza for a 37-25 lead at the break.

To open the second period, the Chants flew on a 24-16 run that would draw them within 53-49 with 4:41 remaining in the contest. An 8-2 spurt put Elon up 61-51 with 2:17 left, thanks to a three-point play by Mariam McLeod, a three-point bomb by Andrews and a pair of free throws by Jessica Williams.

The Phoenix also received key performances from Courtney Nyborg (nine points, three blocked shots) and Anestha Blakeney (a game-high and season-high 12 rebounds). Coastal Carolina was paced by Nikki Reddick (19 points, eight rebounds, three assists), the league's leading scorer, Courtney Brown (13 points), Shannon Calabrese (11 points) and Crystal Brown (nine rebounds).

Elon finished the contest with edges in rebounding (47-41), assists (16-11), turnovers (11-15), blocked shots (4-1) and steals (7-6). The Chants out-shot the Phoenix from both the field (36.8 percent-34.2) and the charity stripe (83.3-61.5).
