Women's Basketball Drop Heartbreaker to Radford, 61-60

CONWAY, S.C. —
Coastal Carolina women's basketball team had four good looks at the basket in the final seconds, but came up empty on each in a 61-60 loss to Radford Saturday night at Kimbel Arena. With six seconds left, CCU's Nikki Reddick rebounded Courtney Brown's miss, and then two more as each of her putbacks hit off the front of the rim. She then kicked it out to an open Whitney Shearer, but the sophomore guard bounced the 3-pointer off the back of the rim.

In a game full of streaks and momentum shifts, it was the Highlanders (3-10, 1-1 in the Big South) who overcame a nine point deficit in the final ten minutes to escape with the victory. Courtney Brown's free throws gave the Lady Chants (5-7, 1-1) their largest lead of the night, 49-40, with 12:53 to play, but a 13-4 run over the next five minutes by Radford tied the game. The two teams swapped baskets down the stretch until Shearer's layup put Coastal back on top, 60-59 with 1:48 to play, but Brandy Allen answered with a basket 37 seconds later to give Radford the final margin, as the Lady Chants went cold. Sherri Rickman rebounded Shearer's miss with 0.7 seconds remaining, and was sent to the free throw line, where she missed both shots, the second intentionally.

Following a timeout with 0.4 on the clock, CCU inbounded the ball but could not get a shot off.

Courtney Brown ended with a career-high for the third straight game, scoring 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting, including Coastal's only 3-pointer of the night, as the Lady Chants were a miserable 1-of-17 from behind the arc. Reddick, the Big South's leading scorer, had 14 points and 13 rebounds in the loss, while Crystal Brown added 12 points.

Amanda Neby and Kylie Williamson led a balanced attack for Radford with 12 points each, as 11 of the 13 Highlander players to get in the game scored. Rickman ended with seven points and 12 boards as Radford snapped a six-game losing streak.

The Lady Chants return to action Monday night, Jan. 7, when they host Liberty at 9:00 p.m., while Radford continues its road trip at Charleston Southern at 7:00 p.m.
