BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- Rachel Malmborg notched 20 kills and Stephanie
Harrington tallied 18 as Birmingham-Southern knocked of Big South
strong
house Coastal Carolina, 3-1, Saturday at BSC's Striplin Center. The
Panthers' defense produced six players with double-digit digs, led by
18
each from Kyndall Waters and Cassie Reed as BSC (11-15) beat the
Chanticleers (16-7) for the first time in six tries.

Birmingham-Southern squeezed out narrow 30-25 and 30-28 wins in games
one and two before Coastal blistered the nets for a .457 hitting
percentage to win game three, 30-17. Birmingham-Southern fended off the
Coastal challenge in game four, winning 30-27.

The Chanticleers sported a 7-1 Big South Conference record heading into
the match and stood just a game behind league-leading Winthrop (8-1).
Though BSC's win over the Chanticleers will not count against Coastal
due to the Panthers' provisional status, it is Birmingham-Southern's
first victory over Coastal Carolina in the six-match history between
the
two schools. Coastal beat BSC 3-0 in Conway, S.C., on Sept. 29.

BSC hit .262 as a team in the victory, driving home 68 kills. The
defense was the story, however, as the Panthers dug 90 of Coastal's
attacks. Jeanne Lambert had 21 kills for the Chants while Katie Knutson
notched 15 and Lauren Wozniak tallied 12. Lambert also had 23 digs in
the effort.

Jenny Thomasson added 10 kills for the Panthers, who win their second
straight after Friday's victory over Charleston Southern. Reed had nine
kills and Danielle Graff and Waters notched seven each. Harrington and
Malmborg, however, combined for 28 kills on 94 attacks and hit .319.

Birmingham-Southern next travels to Elon and High Point on Saturday and
Sunday, Nov. 2 and 3. Coastal Carolina faces Georgia State at 2 p.m.
EST Sunday afternoon.
