Lee Leads Coastal Carolina Softball Past Birmingham-Southern

CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina junior Holly Lee went 3-for-5 with a pair of homeruns to lead the Lady Chanticleers to a doubleheader sweep of Birmingham-Southern by identical scores of 5-1. Coastal improves to 13-10, while the Panthers fall to 7-27.

Lee, a junior from Darlington, South Carolina, jumped from fifth to third place on Coastal Carolina's all-time career homerun list in the opener with a pair of two-run roundtrippers. She now has five homers on the season and 24 for her career, trailing Sarah Lockett's 37 homers and Sherry Johnson's 31.

Danielle Jenkins (5-1) posted the victory in game one for the Lady Chanticleers, allowing six hits and walking none while striking out five. Ami Rogers (4-14) took the loss for the Panthers.

In the nightcap, the Lady Chanticleers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Stephanie Belden and a RBI triple by Kimberly Josephson. Birmingham-Southern closed the gap to one run in the bottom of the same inning on a solo homer by Meredith McDow.

Coastal took a 3-1 advantage in the very next inning when Jennifer Schmidt scored on Suzanne Kimbrell's single to center field. The Lady Chants completed the scoring in the seventh inning on a solo homerun by Jenkins and a RBI double by Amanda DeGrendele.

Belden (4-3) allowed just three hits while striking out six in route to the victory. Dawn Treadwell (3-11) allowed eight hits, five walks and three runs in 5.0 inning of work for Birmingham-Southern.

Lee finished the day with a double and two homers and was walked intentionally three times in the second game. Josephson went 4-for-8 on the day to raise her batting average on the season to .338.

Coastal Carolina will now travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to begin play in the 2002 Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech on Friday. The first game for the Lady Chanticleers in the tournament will be at 5:00 p.m. against Appalachian State.
