CCU, College of Charleston Split Softball Doubleheader

CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina scored an incredible 9-8 extra inning victory in the second game of a doubleheader to gain a split with the College of Charleston on Wednesday afternoon at Lady Chants Field. The College of Charleston won the first game 3-2.

In the nightcap, the Cougars (5-10) tallied six runs in the top of the second inning to take a commanding lead. Amanda Cone accounted for four of the runs with a grand slam. The scored remained 6-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Chanticleers scratched across a pair of runs in each the fourth and fifth inning to close the gap to 6-4.

Coastal (2-4) took an 8-6 lead in the sixth inning when Karlye Fortune connected on a three-run homer and freshman Kelly McCoy blasted a solo shot to complete the comeback. Or, so it seemed.

Cone pulled the College of Charleston to within one run with a solo homer to lead off the seventh and then Lindsay Ellis singled home Karlene Loudon to know the score at 8-8.

The Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning, but CCU pitcher Morgan Tolleson struck out Carla Shepherd looking to end the threat. The Lady Chants then won the game in the bottom of the inning when Amanda DeGrendele scored on a fielding error by College of Charleston thirdbaseman Katie Ballard.

Tolleson (1-3) picked up the win in game two with 1.2 innings of work in relief . She allowed just one hit and struck out two. Carla Shepherd (1-2) took the loss, allowing no earned runs and just one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.

At the plate, Kimberly Josephson went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Kelli Julg was 2-for-3 and Fortune went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI. Cone's five RBI and 2-5 performance with the two homers paced the Cougars.

The College of Charleston posted the come-from-behind victory in game one on a two-run homer by Martha McCall in the fifth inning. Shepherd pitched 4.1 innings for the victory in the opener, while Marissa Echenrique pitched the final 2.1 innings for her second save. Tolleson took the loss, allowing one hit and two runs in 4.0 innings in relief of CCU starter Stephanie Belden.

At the plate in the opener, DeGrendele was the only CCU player with more than one hit as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored. The Cougars managed just four hits, but McCall's two-run blast was enough for the victory.

This doubleheader was the first of 11 consecutive home games for Coastal Carolina. The Lady Chants will battle Furman University in a three-game series this weekend. The two squads will play a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
