Box Score Women's Basketball, Lead By Reddick, Gets Past UNC Asheville ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Big South Preseason Player of the Year Nikki Reddick scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five assists as Coastal Carolina held off UNC Asheville, 64-49 in Big South Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night at Justice Center.
Joining Reddick in double figures for the Lady Chanticleers was center Crystal Brown with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The win was Coastal Carolina's second straight and improved its record to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the Big South Conference. UNC Asheville dropped its ninth straight and fell to 3-14 overall and remained winless in the Big South at 0-5.
The Bulldogs were led by center Tonisha Jackson with 10 points. Sherrie Daniels added nine points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Chanticleers were red-hot from the 3-point line in the first half as they were 7-of-14 from beyond the arc to help build a 36-21 lead late in the half. Reddick scored 17 points in the opening half and sank her last three 3-point attempts. Molly Meeks came off the bench and was a perfect 3-of-3 from long distance. The game was tied 14-14 with 10 minutes to go in the opening half when Coastal sank five treys to go on a 17-3 run to lead 36-21.
UNCA got back in the game late in the half as it scored the final five points, getting a three-point play from Hood and a tap-in from Jackson as the first-half buzzer sounded. Coastal Carolina led 36-28 at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Chanticleers built the lead to 17 at 52-35 on a layup from Brown with 11:40 left. The Bulldogs made one final push and cut the lead to eight at 57-49 on a layup from Daniels with 3:31 remaining. UNCA had two chances to close to five but a Lindsey Roche three-poiner rimmed out. Reddick then sank a long trey to push the CCU lead to 60-49. The Bulldogs did not score the rest of the game.
UNCA will play at Winthrop Saturday night at 7 p.m., while Coastal Carolina hosts Charleston Southern on Saturday.
