Box Score Volleyball Falls to UNC Asheville in Four ASHEVILLE, N.C.– Playing with a heavy heart, the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (12-8, 4-2 Big South) fell to the University of North Carolina at Asheville (10-6, 4-2 BSC) in four games Oct. 18, in Asheville, N.C. The Lady Chants lost to the Bulldogs by scores of 28-30, 24-30, 30-26 and 28-30.
Coastal hit .079 in the first game and led 25-20, but Asheville came back to take the game 30-28. UNCA weathered several Coastal comebacks, but won game two 30-24. Coastal had 12 hitting errors compared to 14 kills in the second game.
Coastal took the third game as sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) had seven kills to guide a 30-26 win. The Bulldogs though hit .333 in the fourth game to win the back-and-forth deciding game 30-28.
Jensen had a double-double with 19 kills and 16 digs. It was her seventh straight double-double of the season. Senior Sarah Bennett (Eagen, Minn./Eagen) also had a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) was the third Lady Chant in double figures in kills with 11.
Sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had 10 digs and 54 assists for Coastal.
UNCA was led by Amanda Wiles, who recorded a triple-double with 10 kills, 16 digs and 52 assists.
The Lady Chants were playing just four days after a jet ski accident to senior Carly Draudt (Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita) and assistant coach Katie Knutson.
Coastal Carolina returns home to Kimbel Arena Tuesday, Oct. 21, against College of Charleston. Match time is at 7 p.m.
