Doten breaks single-season shutout record

CONWAY, SC – Senior goalkeeper Candice Doten registered four saves to help the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of Big South rival High Point, Sunday, at CCU Soccer Field. With the shutout, which is Doten’s second straight and her fifth of 2003, she breaks the single-season record, which she previously held.

CCU got off to a quick start in the match as senior Mary Jo Hajek, who was honored during pregame ceremonies along with Coastal’s 12 other seniors, punched the ball into the Panthers’ net off an assist from junior Leah Barrett only three minutes into the match. The remainder of the first period ticked by without either team scoring again, and Coastal took the 1-0 lead into the second half.

The second period began and Coastal nearly reenacted its first goal, scoring three minutes in, but this time it was junior Erin Blevins who took a feed from sophomores Kristina Fisher and Bobbie Parsons, netting her second goal of the season.

Thirteen minutes later Parsons found the net once more for Coastal, hitting the insurance goal courtesy of an assist from Blevins, and the Lady Chants held off High Point to record the win and the shutout.

Shots were even between the two teams, with High Point trying for 16 and CCU attempting only one more. The Lady Chants recorded 10 shots on goal, however, six more than the Panthers. Jen Evans led High Point with five shots, two on goal, and senior Jennifer Tafel was the team leader for Coastal, posting five shots, three on goal.

Goalkeeper Katie Myers grabbed seven saves for High Point during the 90 minutes.

The Lady Chants advance to 10-8-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the conference, while the Panthers drop to 7-8-0, 3-3-0.

Coastal women’s soccer wrapped up its home slate with today’s match, but still has one regular season game to play, taking on Big South opponent Charleston Southern this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m.
