Women's Basketball Defeats Wofford, 65-55 CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (3-0) used a 17-4 run to start the second half and withstood a late rally by Wofford College (0-4) as the Lady Chants defeated the Terriers 65-55 Nov. 28, in Conway, S.C. Senior Crystal Brown (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) and senior Temecca Barnes (Malone, Fla./Chipola J.C.) both had career highs as Coastal starts the season 3-0 for the second straight year.
Coastal jumped out to an 8-2 lead, capped off by two free throws by senior Nikki Reddick (Hartsville, S.C./Hartsville) at 17:14. But Wofford hung in as Coastal could never get a lead by as much as six. The Lady Chants were led in the first half by the scoring of Reddick (10 points) and the rebounding of Crystal Brown (nine rebounds). Coastal shot 36.7 percent from the field in the first half and Reddick went 5-of-6 from the line.
Coastal went on the run in the second half that ended at 13:56 by a Reddick free throw. The Lady Chants led by as many as 22 points on two occassions as Barnes hit two free throws to give the Chants the wide margin. Wofford then went on an 11-0 run with three three-pointers, the last from K.C. Correll at 6:19. Wofford actually cut the lead to nine on two occassions, the last with 3:12 left, but Coastal took an 11-point lead on a Reddick jumper and a Barnes free throw gave Coastal a 12-point lead with 47 seconds remaining.
Reddick led the Lady Chants with 22 points and seven rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals. Barnes had a career high 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and six made free throws. Crystal Brown led the Lady Chants with 15 rebounds, also a career-high.
Coastal forced Wofford into 21 turnovers, while grabbing 10 steals. CCU capitalized with 20 points off Wofford miscues.
Brie Bradshaw led the Terriers with 14 points. Wofford had three players in double figures in points as Correll had 12 and Jenny Weurding had 10 points and nine rebounds. This game marked the return of former Coastal assistant coach Samantha Young, who now is the head coach at Wofford.
The Lady Chants travel to Greenville, N.C., to face the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Saturday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m., in the U.S. Cellular Classic.
