Box Score Women's Basketball Held Off By Liberty, 82-76
CONWAY, S.C. – Liberty's Katie Feenstra scored a career-high 27 points, including 20 in the second half, as the Lady Flames held on to defeat Coastal Carolina, 82-76 in Big South women's action Monday night in Kimbel Arena.
The win was Liberty's 14th straight and improved its record to 17-3 overall, 9-0 in the Big South Conference, while Coastal fell to 9-9 overall, 4-5 in the Big South.
Reigning Big South Player of the Week, Nikki Reddick led the Coastal attack with 21 points, along with five assists. Four others posted double figures on the evening for the Lady Chants including sophomore Lucia Popovici, who scored a career-high 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Junior Cyndie Troutman led all rebounders on the night with 12.
In the first half, Liberty jumped out to an early 9-4 lead after making their first three shots of the game. The Lady Chants would fight back narrowing the Lady Flame lead to one point (18-17) with 9:22 left in the first half on a jumper by Troutman, that capped off an 8-2 run. Liberty would head into the locker room with its biggest lead of the first half at nine (39-30) on a jumper by Susan Foreid, just before the halftime buzzer.
After a jumper by Feenstra to start the second half, pushing the Liberty lead to its biggest of the night at 11, the Lady Chants responded by going on a 9-1 run, cutting the Lady Flame lead to 42-39 with 17:16 remaining. Coastal would get as close as one point at 60-59 with 9:03 remaining on a three-pointer by Reddick.
For the game Liberty connected on 28-of-54 from the field, (51.9%) including 13-of-21 (61.9%) for the second half, while Coastal was 28-of-58 (48.3%) from the field. Despite the height advantage inside, Liberty only out-rebounded CCU by a 35-33 margin.
Coastal will next travel to High Point to take on the Lady Panthers on Friday at 7 p.m., while Liberty hosts Hampton on Thursday at 6 p.m.
