Box Score Baseball Edges The Citadel, 4-2
CONWAY, SC — Junior Steven Carter (8-2) hurled seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, as the Coastal Carolina baseball team held on to defeat The Citadel, 4-2, Wednesday evening at Watson Stadium. Coastal, winners of three straight, improve to 34-12, while The Citadel falls to 25-19.
Coastal took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when junior catcher Chad Oxendine doubled in Tyler Hasbrouck from second base.
The Chants added a pair of runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 3-0. Senior third baseman Steve Pinocchio drove in the first run on a double down the right field line, scoring Mike Costanzo, who singled in the previous at-bat. Junior outfielder Greg Orsimarsi would scored the next run from third on a Bulldog passed ball.
The Bulldogs scored their first run in the top of the sixth on a single to center by junior first baseman Chip Cannon, scoring Brook Dantzler from second base.
The Chanticleers would add on one more in the seventh inning when junior center fielder Ryan McGraw, who led off the inning with a double, scored from third on a wild pitch by Evan Burgess.
Cannon would help the Bulldogs cut the CCU lead to 4-2 in the eighth inning when he drove in his second run of the ball game on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Andy Phillips.
Sophomore Jake Hurry picked up his first save of the year when he got Dantzler to hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning. Griff Beckham (1-1) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up three runs on five hits, in 3.1 innings of work.
Coastal will next face Liberty in a three-game Big South Conference series, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The Citadel will face Georgia Southern in a three-game Southern Conference series at Riley Park starting on Saturday at 3 p.m.
