Box Score Baseball Advances to Big South Tournament Championship Game
ROCK HILL , SC —Second-seeded Coastal Carolina won its third Tournament game in as many tries and advanced to the championship round of the 2003 Big South Baseball Championship with a 10-1 drubbing of Elon Saturday night at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Chanticleers (44-15) won their 10th-straight Tournament game dating back to 2001, and will face sixth-seeded Liberty (16-36) Sunday at 1:00 pm for a chance at their third-consecutive Big South crown. CCU defeated the Flames 10-1 in last year’s title game.
Should the Flames win the first contest, a winner-take-all second game would follow approximately 30 minutes following the completion of the first for the League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Coastal raced out to an early 2-0 lead off Elon starter Luke Pangle (5-3), and broke open the floodgates with four runs in the second and one in the third to take a 7-1 advantage. Brett Grandstrand and Tyler Hasbrouck each provided two-run singles in the second to help build the onslaught.
Hasbrouck and McGraw each collected three hits apiece for CCU, while Justin Sturge (10-2) allowed one run in eight innings for the win. Hasbrouck tallied a game-high four RBI.
Justin Sturge (10-2) picked up the win, scattering six hits, tossing eight innings, while allowing only one run. Luke Pangle (5-3) picked up the loss for Elon, surrendering six runs in 1.1 innings of work.
Coastal will advance to the championship game for the third consecutive season and face Liberty on Sunday, at 1 p.m.
