Box Score Volleyball Defeats UNCW in Three Games CONWAY, S.C.– The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (7-6) won its third straight match with a three-game sweep of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (3-8) Sept. 23, in Conway, S.C. The Lady Chants won the match by scores of 30-24, 30-23 and 30-24.
Coastal hit .301 on the match, including a .372 percentage in game two. Coastal took its first lead in game one at 6-5 on an attack error by the Seahawks. The lead would get to 16-11 before a UNCW timeout. Two straight aces by sophomore Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and a kill by sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) extended the lead to 23-16 and a Kimble kill ended the game at 30-24.
Coastal had 20 kills in game two. With the game tied at 18, senior Carly Draudt (Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita) added a spark off the bench with two kills and Coastal led 24-18 on an attack error by the Seahawks. UNCW would get as close as 24-21, but the Chants closed the game out on a 6-2 run.
Coastal hit .250 in the third game, compared to -.024 for the Seahawks. The game was tied as late at 17-all, but an attack error, a block by freshman Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and Draudt and an ace by sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) gave the Lady Chants a lead they would never relinquish. A Draudt kill ended the match and extended Coastal game winning streak to nine and match winning streak to three.
Obert had a season-high six blocks for the Lady Chants, who had a team high 10 on the night. Three players also had double figures in digs, led by Hampton’s 12. Hampton also had 37 assists on the match. Jensen led the Chants with 15 kills and had eight digs.
Bea Gerevich led all players with 16 kills and 17 digs.
Coastal stays at home for its Big South Conference opener Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m., against High Point University.
