CONWAY, S.C.- The College of Charleston (4-10) outscored the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (7-6) 42-23 in the second half as the Cougars defeated the Lady Chants 60-57 Jan. 14, in Conway, S.C.

Coastal held a 34-18 halftime lead, but the College of Charleston cut the advantage to six in under five minutes. CofC, who shot 52 percent compared to 25 for Coastal in the second half, was back down by 10 at the 11:31 mark on a three-pointer by Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), but would eventually tie the game at 50 with 4:55 left on a layup by Eliza Kucharska. The Cougars took their first lead at 4:24 on free throws by Erica Nesmith, and went up by as many as six with 2:46 remaining. Coastal cut the lead to one on three points from senior Cyndie Troutman (Hampton, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) and two free throws from senior Nikki Reddick (Hartsville, S.C./Hartsville). College of Charleston came right back and made the lead 58-55 at 1:32 on a layup by Marketta Talley. After a Coastal timeout, Reddick hit a short jumper with 22 seconds left to cut the CofC lead to one. Talley hit 1-of-2 free throws, but Reddick missed a jumper with five seconds left, sending the Cougars to the line. Patrice Bryant hit one free throw and freshman Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) missed a three-pointer as time expired.

The first half was owned by the Lady Chants, as Coastal shot 50 percent from the field, 5-of-10 from three-point range and led by 16 points at the break. Senior Whitney Shearer (Monitcello, Ky./Wayne County) went 4-for-4 from three-point range and had 12 points at the break.

Reddick led Coastal with 16 points and nine rebounds, a season high. Troutman added 14 points and Shearer ended with 12. Senior Crystal Brown (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) had six rebounds and three assists.

Bryant led the Cougars with 21points while Rachel King had five assists. The win was the 500th for College of Charleston’s women’s basketball program.

Coastal hosts Liberty University Saturday, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m., in a Big South Conference matchup at Kimbel Arena.
