Women's Basketball Wins Over Appalachian State, 83-80

    

BOONE, N.C.- Senior Nikki Reddick (Hartsville, S.C./Hartsville) hit a three-pointer from 24 feet with two seconds remaining, breaking an 80-80 tie and giving the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (5-5) an 83-80 win over Appalachian State University (1-10) Jan. 3 in Boone, N.C.

Coastal had a 78-73 lead with 2:51 left on a layup by senior Temecca Barnes (Malone, Fla./Chipola J.C.). Crystal Barringer came right back for Appalachian State with a layup to cut the lead to three. Reddick made one of two free throws at the 2:15 mark, making the score 79-75. With 2:02 left, Kiki Conyers hit two free throws, cutting the lead to two. Again, Reddick went 1-of-2 from the line, but Aisha Bryant hit two free throws with 1:25 left to make the score 80-79. Coastal had the ball with under a minute left, but turned the ball over to the Mountaineers, but Reddick took a charge on Barringer, giving the ball back to the Lady Chants. Coastal held the ball to the end of the shot clock, with Reddick missing a shot in the lane. She then was called for an over-the-back call with 24 seconds left. Danielle Edwards made 1-of-2 from the line, setting up the Reddick heroics.

Coastal was up by eight on four occasions in the first half, the latest at the 4:27 mark, but Appalachian State tied the game at 1:22 of the first half on a three by Barringer. Coastal shot 52 percent from the field in the first half and hit four three-pointers.

Coastal brought out the lead to seven points at 18:08 on two free throws from senior Cyndie Troutman (Hampton, Tenn./Walters State C.C.), but a 9-0 run by the Mountaineers gave them their first lead at 16:48. Appalachian State took its last lead at 12:16.

Reddick scored 33 points for the Lady Chants and went 13-of-16 from the free-throw line. She also hit four three-pointers and had four assists and nine rebounds. Reddick also moved to seventh all-time in Big South Conference history with 1,727 points.

Troutman had a career high at Coastal with 17 points, 14 of them in the second half. Barnes and senior Crystal Brown (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) had 10 points apiece. Brown also added eight rebounds.

Coastal ended the game going 48.2 percent from the field, 50 percent (7-of-14) from three-point land and hit 22-of-30 from the free-throw line.

Bryant led the Mountaineers with 28 points, while Lindsay Smith added 16. The Mountaineers also were hot from the field, shooting 50.8 percent.

Coastal returns to Kimbel Arena to face Coker College Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m.
