Box Score Volleyball Wins Again, Downs UNC Asheville, 3-1 More Information:
Junior Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary (Ole Miss)) led the charge with match highs of 19 kills and 25 digs as the red-hot Coastal Carolina volleyball team (12-7, 4-3 Big South) defeated conference rival UNC Asheville (12-13, 3-3 Big South)(23-30, 30-19, 30-28, 32-30), 3-1, at the Justice Center on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 16.
The day did not begin well for the Lady Chanticleers, as it fell in the first game to the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bulldogs played its best game of the day with a hitting percentage of .356. Coastal held a 22-20 advantage before the Bullgdogs went on a 10-1 run to take the first game.
The second game was all CCU as it opened on a 13-2 run on the way to its 31-19 victory, due in part to the teams .457 hitting percentage.
The third game was competitive match throughout, with the two teams being tied at 13, 21 and 26. But in the end it was Coastal's sophomore Alicia Meyers (Temecula Calif./Temecula Valley) who registered two straight kills to give the Chants the victory and put the Bulldogs one game from elimination.
Game four was all Coastal in the beginning, as they opened up a six point lead at 20-14. The lead would stay at five at 29-24 before the Bulldogs began a furiously rally, fighting off five game points and tying the game at 29 all. Jensen's serve gave Coastal a one point advantage and brought up the sixth game point, only to see UNCA rally back on a kill by Ashley Wrightenberry. CCU would finally stop the rally and down the Bulldogs on its seventh opportunity for the game and match victory.
Besides Jensen other Chants to play well include Meyers who registered 13 kills and 14 digs, junior Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and sophomore Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio.Mother Mercy) who each had 11 kills in the victory. Reigning Big South Player of the Week, Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had a match-high with 58 assists to go along with nine digs. Junior Kali Banghart (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) also reached double figures with 16 digs.
For the match the Lady Chanticleers outhit the Lady Bulldogs 69-65 in kills and .233 to .230 in hitting percentage while trailing 82-78 in digs.
CCU will continue the road trip as it plays Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m.
