Box Score Volleyball Wins Second Straight, Defeats Liberty, 3-2 More Information:
The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (9-6, 2-2 Big South) won their second straight Big South conference game with a win over Liberty University (2-13, 1-2 Big South) on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 2, (30-22, 22-30, 30-25, 27-30,15-11) in five sets at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va.
Coastal never trailed in the first game and at one point held an eight point lead, thanks in part to the 11-5 run it put together midway through the contest. The second game the opposite was true, as Liberty controlled the game from the beginning due in part to their 13-3 lead to start the game.
Game three was a back and forth affair, as neither team could open up more than a two point lead for most of the early portion of the game. CCU would use a stretch where they scored 12 of the games next 19 points to take the game and the lead in matches, 2-1.
The fourth game was all Lady Chanticleers in the early going, as they jumped out to a 15-11 lead only to see the Flames battle back to tie the game at 23 all. The Flames kept the mometum to took the fourth game 30-27 to set up a pivotal and deciding fifth game.
The fifth game looked to be an easy victory for the Lady Chants, as they scored seven of the games first 10 points, only to see the Flames storm back to get to within two on several occasions. Coastal was finally able to take control and capture the game and match victory, 15-11.
The Lady Chants had three players with double figures in kills, led by Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary (Ole Miss)) who tallied a double-double with 23 kills and 13 kills. Sophomore Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) tallied a double-double as well, with 16 kills and 12 digs. Junior Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) totaled 10 kills in the victory. Setter Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had a match high was 57 assists. Sophomore Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) and junior Kali Banghart (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) tied for team lead with 14 digs each.
CCU will next take the court on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. as the welcome UNC Asheville to KImble Arena in its first home conference game of the season.
