The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (7-11-2) ended its 2004 season with a 3-1 loss to Birmingham-Southern College in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament Nov. 4.

TOLAN NAMEDTO THE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Coastal Carolina women’s soccer freshman Morgan Tolan (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) was named to the All-Tournament Team for the 2004 Big South Championships held Nov. 4-6 in Charleston, S.C.

Tolan, who is normally a forward, stepped up to play in goal in the quarterfinal game against Birmingham-Southern Nov. 4 as sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) was sitting out due to a red card suspension. Tolan had four saves on the night and held Birmingham-Southern scoreless for 68 minutes until the Panthers scored three second half goals to defeat the Lady Chanticleers 3-1. It was Tolan’s second career game in goal, as she had one save in the 6-0 shutout of Erskine Nov. 2.

PARSONS, BARRETT NAMED TO ALL-BIG SOUTH TEAM: The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team had two players selected to the 2004 All-Big South Teams, announced tonight (Nov. 3) at the Big South Tournament banquet in Charleston, S.C. Junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) was selected to the All-Big South First Team as well as the Academic All-Big South Team, while senior Leah Barrett (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) was selected to the All-BSC Second Team.

Parsons leads the Lady Chanticleers in goals with 10 and points with 21. She also is tied for fourth in goals and is seventh in points in the Big South. Parsons played in all 20 of the Lady Chants’ matches and has taken 102 shots, 48 on goal. She has twice been named Big South Player of the Week on Sept. 14 and Oct. 5. She had a hat trick in a 5-0 win over VMI Oct. 2, the first of her career and had a goal in eight games. The all-time leading scorer in Coastal history, Parsons also was on the all-tournament team at the UNCG/adidas Classic Sept. 10-12. Parsons also has a 3.4 grade-point-average in physical education, leading to her first selection on the Academic All-Big South Team.

Barrett also has played in all 20 games this season, scoring three goals and adding three assists on the season. She moved to second on Coastal’s career goals list in a 2-0 victory over Longwood Sept. 15. She had three game-winning goals to her credit this season, tops on the team and tied for fifth in the conference. For her career, Barrett had 13 goals and 10 assists for 36 points.

FIVE SENIORS HONORED ON SENIOR NIGHT: Seniors Leah Barrett (LaPlata, Md/LaPlata), Erin Blevins (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia), Jennifer Maxwell (Englishtown, N.J./Notre Dame), Johanna Rosier (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and Lindsay Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) were honored before the Oct. 16 game against Winthrop as part of the Senior Night festivites. Barrett and Willis are fifth-year seniors who have been with the program since its inception. Maxwell and Rosier are four-year members, while Blevins spent her first two years at Coker College. The quintet has combined for 27 career goals and 75 career points.

FRESHMAN ON FIRE AGAINST ERSKINE: The Coastal Carolina freshman class had a major hand in the 6-0 victory over Erskine Nov. 2. Freshman Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork) had two second half goals and now has four for the season, second on the team. Freshman Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) had a goal and an assist, while classmate Missy Winstead (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) scored her first career goal. Freshman Morgan Tolan (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) earned her first career win in goal, stopping one shot to preserve the shutout.

COASTAL SNAPS ITS SHUTOUT STREAK IN A BIG WAY: Coastal had gone three straight games without scoring a goal before its contest against Erskine Nov. 2, but the Lady Chants tallied six goals, a season-high, and upped its point total from 60 to 77.

COASTAL, SAMFORD SCORELESS: For the first time since Oct. 2, 2002, Coastal Carolina was involved in a scoreless tie. The Lady Chants and Samford failed to score in 110 minutes Oct. 22. Sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had six saves in the tie. In all, Coastal has been involved in five scoresless ties in the five-year history of the program.

SHUTOUT STREAK STOPPED: Coastal had a shutout streak of 227:29 broke at Birmingham-Southern Oct. 24. The Lady Chants had shutouts against Winthrop and Samford in that streak.

CONTRAST IN GOALS: Junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) and sophomore Kristine Kingsbury (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) scored the goals in Coastal’s 2-0 win over Winthrop Oct. 16. It was Parsons’ eighth goal of the season and 23rd of her career, while Kingsbury scored her first career goal in the win.

DEFENSE STINGY IN WIN OVER WINTHROP: Coastal posted its fifth shutout of the season Oct. 16 in the 2-0 win over Winthrop. Sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had four saves in the victory. The Lady Chants are two shutouts away from the record of seven, set in 2003.

McCOLL SCORES IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES: Freshman Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) scored her first two career goals in back-to-back games against Radford and Charleston Southern. McColl also had an assist against Radford and now is second place on the team with 10 points.

PARSONS NETS FIRST CAREER HAT TRICK IN WIN: Junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) scored three goals in the win over VMI, giving her seven on the season, 22 for her career as well as recording her first career hat trick. Parsons scored her first goal at 37:05 off a feed from sophomore Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic). She then opened the second half with a goal at 46:18 from sophomore Leah Hackmann (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and concluded the scoring with just five seconds left off a feed from senior Jennifer Maxwell (Englishtown, N.J./Notre Dame).

STOLL STATS: Sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had her sixth shutout of the season in a 0-0 tie against Samford Oct. 22, which leads the conference. She had a 1.55 goals-against-average and a .745 save percentage in 18 matches this season. Stoll has made 82 saves on the year, including a career-high 11 against UNC Greensboro Sept. 12.

BARRETT MOVES UP ALL-TIME GOALS LIST: With her game-winning goal in Coastal’s 2-0 win over Longwood, senior Leah Barrett (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) moved into second place on Coastal’s all-time goals list. Barrett scored her 12th career goal, surpassing Kristin Wisse (2000-02). Junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) leads the Lady Chanticleers

with 23 career goals. Barrett now has 13 goals for her career.

PARSONS NAMED BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) has been named the Big South Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 12, the conference office announced today (Sept. 14).Parsons notched a goal in each of the three matches the Lady Chanticleers had this past week. She scored her first goal of the season Sept. 8, in a 3-2 loss to UNC Wilmington off an assist from junior Rachel Devine (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown). Parsons then scored the first goal in a 2-1 win over Old Dominion Sept. 10 in the first day of the UNCG/adidas Classic off a feed from senior Leah Barrett (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata). She then had her third goal of the season in a 7-1 loss to UNC Greensboro in the first half off a pass from senior Erin Blevins (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia). For her efforts this past weekend, Parsons was named to the UNCG/adidas Classic All-Tournament Team.

PARSONS, FISHER NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Juniors Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) and Kristina Fisher (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove) were named to the UNCG/adidas Classic Sept. 10 and 12 in Greensboro, N.C. Parsons scored a goal in matches against Old Dominion and UNC Greensboro. Fisher had a shot against the Spartans at midfield.

KARELITZ PUTS IN GAME-WINNER AGAINST ODU: Freshman Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork) scored her second career goal and her first game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Old Dominion Sept. 10. Karelitz scored with just 10:44 remaining as the ball went off a Monarch defender and into the net.

SPREAD THE WEALTH: After a goal by freshman Missy Winstead (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) in a 6-0 win over Erskine Nov. 2, 12 Lady Chants have now score a point this season. Junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) leads the attack with 19 points, with freshman Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) at 10 points.

THE DOWN UNDER DUO: Sophomore Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) and freshman Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) combined for five goals and five assists in Coastal’s regular-season. McColl set up senior Leah Barrett (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) for the game-winner over Campbell while Borucinski fed freshman Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork) for a goal in a 2-0 win over Western Carolina. Unfortunately, Borucinski injured her knee against Charleston Southern and is out for the tournament.

CCU PICKED AS BIG SOUTH FAVORITE: The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team was picked as the favorite in the 2004 Big South Conference Pre-Season Poll, the conference office announced. The Lady Chants received 143 points overall, including five first-place votes. The 2003 squad, in Coastal’s fourth season of women’s soccer, went 10-9-2, earning the most single-season wins in program history. The Lady Chants also made their mark by tying for the regular season conference title for the first time.

CHANTS BIG SOUTH CO-CHAMPS: Coastal Carolina captured the Big South regular season co-championship in 2003 when the Chants tied with Charleston Southern, 1-1. The Lady Chants won a share of its first-ever Big South regular season conference crown in only the program’s fourth year of existence. The team final mark of 4-2-1 in the league is its best conference finish in program history.

SOCCERBUZZ NAMED CHANT RECRUITING CLASS ONE OF SOUTHEAST’S BEST: The Coastal Carolina University 2004 women’s soccer recruiting class has been ranked 22nd in the Southeast Region by Soccerbuzz.com, the website announced recently.

The Coastal recruiting class includes midfielder/forward Kali Demmel (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge), midfielder Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork), midfielder Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley), forward Morgan Tolan (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) and defender Missy Winstead (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach).

This is the first time that the Lady Chants have had a recruiting class ranked by Soccerbuzz.com since the 2000 season, when they were grouped with Central Florida, East Carolina and UNC Wilmington as the Best of the Rest in the Southeast. Coastal also was the only team in the Big South that was ranked. The University of North Carolina topped the Southeast Region, while Texas A&M had the top class in the nation.
