Men's Soccer to Begin Play in Big South Tournament

The Coastal Carolina Men's Soccer Team (11-7-1, 4-3 Big South) will taking the long road down to Birmingham, Ala. to participate in the Big South's Tournament, Nov. 11-14. at BSC Soccer Park. The Chanticleers will play the second match on Thursday as the #2 Chanticleers take on the #7 seed VMI Keydets at 3:30 p.m. The day starts with #3 Winthrop taking on #6 UNC Asheville at 1 p.m.. The #4 seed Liberty Flames will battle against #5 seed Radford Highlanders at 6 p.m. and top seed Birmingham-Southern College taking on #8 High Point University at 8:45 p.m. The two semifinals will be on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The championship game will be a Sunday afternoon matinee starting at 3 p.m. CCU had control of its own destiny going into last week’s game against High Point University, and they took full advantage, defeating HPU, 5-0. The win allowed Coastal to finish the season with a 4-3 record in conference play, which tied them with Winthrop and Liberty, who also boast the same conference record. The Chanticleers earned the second seed by virtue of tie-breaking wins over both the other schools. Last week besides the win over High Point, CCU also defeated #25 South Carolina, 3-2, and were downed by #22 College of Charleston, 3-2, in a very busy week of action.
Scouting VMI
The Keydets (10-8-1, Big South 2-4-1) have had interesting year. The won their last game to stop their three losing streak. But previous to the losing streak they had won seven of their previous eight games. And they have already set a school record this season for wins. Leading the Keydets is junior Charles Nweke who has totaled 12 goals and 6 assists for 30 points, which is tied for third in the conference. This is the first time all season long that VMI will play a neutral site game.
Coastal defeated VMI earlier this season 5-0 on October 23rd. Coastal own a career record of 3-0 against VMI. VMI has yet to score a goal against Coastal in their short history.

College of Charleston
Senior Mubarike Chisoni tallied a first half goal to give Coastal (11-7-1, 4-3 Big South), an early lead but CCU could not hold down the attacking #22 College of Charleston (13-5-1), who defeated the Chanticleers, 3-2. The Cougars scored all three of their goals in span of 11 minutes in the second half on Sunday afternoon in the early game of the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Soccer Classic in Charleston, S.C. Scoring the other goal for CCU was Jordie Hughes, who capped his amazing week on the field with his fifth goal of the week.
South Carolina
Senior Boyzzz Khumalo came up with a timely game-winning goal with less than a minute remaining in the game (89:11) to propel Coastal (11-6-1, 4-3 Big South) to 3-2 victory over the stunned #25 South Carolina (10-6-1), in the first game of the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Soccer Classic in Charleston, S.C. Freshman Patrick Robertson and junior Jordie Hughes tallied the first two CCU goals, only to see South Carolina storm back to tie the game. The game remained knotted up at 2-2, and looked to be headed to overtime until Khumalo took things into his own hands in the game’s last minute with some late game heroics. Khumalo noticed the USC goalie had venture too far from the net as he took the feed from senior Itayi Pondwa from 20 yards out and deposited the ball into the back corner for the game winner at 89:11.
High Point University
Junior Jordie Hughes, continued his amazing performance by tallying three first-half goals, to lead Coastal (10-6-1, 4-3 Big South) to 5-0 victory on Senior Night, over Big South rival High Point University (7-11, 2-5 Big South) on Wednesday evening at CCU Soccer Stadium. Senior Mubarike Chisoni scored two more goals while fellow senior Boyzzz Khumalo had a three assist evening. Sophomore Jeremy Wolfgang registered his third consecutive victory and fourth win of the season. It was the sixth shutout of the season recorded by Chanticleers goalkeepers.
Dynamic Trio
Senior midfielder Mubarike Chisoni has been outstanding in his first nineteen games of the season scoring 14 goals, including a game winner, and registering six assists. Chisoni has registered the first two hat tricks of his career already this year with one against Anderson and Louisville. For his great performance he was named to the National Player of the Week Team by College Soccer News for the week of Sept. 5. Fellow senior Boyzzz Khumalo has also played well as he has tallied seven goals, including three game winner against Furman, Harvard and South Carolina and registered fifteen assists on the season, which is among the national leaders. JuniorJordie Hughes has put together an outstanding year with 14 goals and ten assists, for a team leading 39 points. For his efforts he was named to the National Player of the Week Team by College Soccer News for the week of Nov. 7.
All-Tournament Honors
Three members of Coastal soccer team were honored with places on the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic All-Tournament Team, November 7. Senior midfielder Mubarike Chisoni, senior forward Boyzzz Khumalo and junior forward Jordie Hughes were all all awarded with places on the team.
Two Chanticleers were honored with places on the UNCG/adidas All-Tournament Team, Oct. 17. Senior midfielder Mubarike Chisoni and fellow senior forward Boyzzz Khumalo were both awarded with places on the All-Tournament Team.
In leading Coastal to a third place finish in the Clemson/Nike Invitational,Oct. 3, senior Dario Grassini was named to the All-Tournament Team along with fellow defender freshman Patrick Robertson. Grassini scored the game winning goal against Hofstra in a thrilling 3-2 victory on Oct. 1.
Players of the Week
Jordie Hughes was most recent Coastal soccer player to capture Player of the Week honors. He was named the Big South Player of the Week, Nov. 9, for his 5 goal and an assist effort for 11 points against High Point, #25 South Carolina and #22 College of Charleston. Hughes scored his first hat trick of the season against High Point while registering single goals against South Carolina and College of Charleston
Jordie Hughes became the lastest Coastal men’s soccer player to be named Player of the Week on Oct. 26. He was honored for his performance against VMI when he registered two goals and and assist. Previously, Boyzzz Khumalo was named Player of the Week in the Big South Conference for the week of Sept. 6-12. Khumalo had a great week with three goals scored and four assists tallied. That was the second consecutive week a Chant had captured the honor, with Mubarike Chisioni taking home the award for the week of August 30-Sept. 5. Chisoni scored four goals and registered three assists during the week as Coastal opened the 2004 campaign with a pair of wins.
Career Marks
Boyzzz Khumalo with 15 assists this season, has now amassed 25 career assists, which ties him for 6th all-time with former Chant Claude Higgins.
Mubarike Chisoni, with the six assists he has totaled this season, now has 24 career assists, which is seventh
on the Chants All-Time assist list.
Jordie Hughes with the 14 goals he has totaled this season is now tied for 7th on Coastal all-time goal scoring list as junior with 34 career goals with former Chant Claude Higgins.
Among the NCAA Leaders
Jordie Hughes is 9th in the NCAA in points per game (2.0) and fourth nationally in total points this season, 38. Hughes is 21st nationally in assists per game .53 as well.
Mubarike Chisoni is 15th nationally with 1.79 points per game on his 14 goals and six assists this season
Boyzzz Khumalo is ranked among the top two nationally with .79 assists per game and has the second most total assists in college soccer with 15.
Team Ranking
Coastal soccer excels at getting many players involved, as it lead the Big South Conference by tallying 2.63 assists per game. Coastal also is the hardest team to score against in the conference with a goals against average of 1.14. The most goals the Chants goalkeepers have allowed in any single game is three and as a team it leads in the conference with six shutouts this season. Coastal is second in the conference by averaging 2.42 goals per game and 9th nationally in scoring offense.
Self Control
The Chants have shown themselves to be a poised bunch, with only 17 yellow card on the season, which is the lowest in the lleague.
Individual League Rankings
Jordie Hughes leads the conference by registering five muli-goal games and is second by registering three-multi assist games. Boyzzz Khumalo leads the conference by recording four multi-assist games. Mubarike Chisoni is second in the conference with four-multi-goal games this season.
Watch List
Coastal Carolina’s Boyzzz Khumalo is on the watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual honor in men’s soccer, the organization announced. The senior forward was also named to the College Soccer News Second Team Preseason All-American. Khumalo is coming off a 2003 season where he scored seven goals, including three game winners, and tallied 10 assists for 24 points.
Honors
Former CCU star and current L.A. Galaxy forward Joseph Ngwenya was honored, August 8, for his 2003 accomplishments by the Big South Conference when he received the Howard Bagwell Award, given to the most outstanding Men’s Player of Year for the 2003-2004 season. Ngwenya is coming off a season where he led the nation in scoring for the second consecutive season (56 points) and was one of three finalist forthe Hermann Trophy while being honored as the 2003 Men’s Soccer National Soccer Player of the Year by Soccer America. He also earned his second-straight All-Big South award as well as being named the Big South Tournament’s MVP.

Coastal will participate in the Big South Tournament to be held in Birmingham, Ala. this week, If they win their game against VMi they will continue play with a match against the winner of the Winthrop-UNC Asheville contest on Friday afternoon, Nov.12, at 4 p.m. If they win that game it will be on to the championship on Sunday, November 14 starting at 3 p.m.
