The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (2-2) fell behind Appalachian State University (3-3) by 18 points in the first half, but had a look in the final seconds to win the game. Junior Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman) had a look at a three-pointer at the buzzer, but the shot was blocked by Kiki Conyers and the Mountaineers defeated the Lady Chanticleers 67-65 Dec. 2, at Kimbel Arena.

The Mountaineers came out on fire, hitting their first eight shots. They had a 12-point lead at 14:54 on a three by Lindsay Smith and with 8:42 left, extended the lead to 25-7 on a layup from Conyers. Rose cut the lead to single digits at 5:47 on a jumper and a three-pointer by junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.) with 42 seconds left gave ASU only a seven-point lead. Rose hit 1-of-2 free throws with six seconds left, making the score 35-27 at the half.

Appalachian State shot 54.2 percent from the field in the first half, compared to 33.3 for the Lady Chants. Senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) had nine first-half points to lead Coastal, while Conyers led the Mountaineers with 10.

Appalachian had a lead of seven points on two free throws from Jamie Bennett at 13:35, but Coastal went on a 7-0 run the next 1:51, capped off by a jumper from senior Lucia Popovici (Edmonton, Alberta/Jasper Place). Coastal tied the game again with 7:22 left on a jumper from junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.), but the Lady Chants could never take the lead. The Mountaineers had a lead of as many as seven points with 30 seconds left on a free throw from Jocelyn Wyatt, but the Lady Chants had one last run in them. Rose was fouled with 19 seconds left and connected on two free throws. On the other end Lindsay Smith missed two free throws and sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) hit a three with nine seconds left, making the score 67-65. Appalachian got a good look with five seconds left, but Whitney Tossie’s layup went off the rim. The ball got to Rose with one tick on the clock, but her shot was blocked.

Brown led Coastal with a season-high 18 points and eight rebounds. Turner and Dill added 11, while sophomore Vanessa Laug (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had a career-high with 10 points. Rose also had five assists and four steals. Coastal had 28 bench points on the night.

The Mountaineers were led by Conyers with 17 points. Danielle Edwards added 11 points and eight rebounds. Bennett led ASU with four assists. Appalachian shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the field and made 18 free throws.

Coastal will take 10 days off for finals and will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face nationally-ranked University of North Carolina Sunday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m. Appalachian travels to Western Carolina Dec. 6, at 7 p.m.
