Women's Soccer Signs Five for 2004 Season

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer program has signed five student-athletes to national letters-of-intent for the 2004-05 school year, CCU head coach Karrie Miller announced. Joining the program in the fall of 2004 are Kali Demmel (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge), Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork), Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley), Morgan Tolan (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Missy Winstead (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach).

Demmel, a midfielder/forward, was a three-year starter at Thunder Ridge High School and was the team’s leading scorer her senior year, before an injury cut her season short. She was part of the 5A state champion team her sophomore season and led the team in assists her junior campaign. Demmel also was a seven-year starter with Real Colorado National, which won the state club championship in 2000, 2002 and 2004. Demmel also was on the Honor Roll in 2001 and 2002. She is the daughter of Larry and Diane Demmel of Highlands Ranch.

Karelitz, a midfielder, was named to the NSCAA/adidas High School All-American Team and was the NSCAA South Carolina Player of the Year her junior season at Dutch Fork. She was the 4A Female Player of the Year by The State Newspaper in 2003, scoring 31 goals and three assists for the Region IV 4A champions. She was selected to The State Newspaper 4A All-Area Team in 2004 and was named the Outstanding Senior at Dutch Fork. She is a three-time all-region team member and was a Viking Cup finalist and all-tournament team honoree her junior and senior season. She has been on the National Honor Roll, is a Who’s Who Among American High School Students and earned the SCHSL Scholar-Athlete Award her senior year. Karelitz is the daughter of Steve and Cheryl Karelitz of Columbia.

McColl, a midfielder, has been on a New Zealand national team since 1999, as she was the captain of the New Zealand Secondary Schoolgirls Team in 2003. She also was on the Under-19 National Academy team in 2003 and was a three-time captain of the Hutt Valley High School First Eleven. McColl earned the Most Valuable Player Award at the National Secondary School Tournament and was nominated for the Wellington College Sport Female Soccer Player of the Year. In 2002, McColl was nominated for the Wellington College Sportsperson of the Year. McColl is the daughter of Rob and Debby McColl of Hutt Valley.

Tolan, a forward, was a First Team All-Maryland selection her senior year at Stephen Decatur High School. She was the leading scorer in the Bayside Conference with 29 goals and six assists. Tolan is a four-time all-Mason-Dixon and a three-time all-conference selection. She has earned four varsity letters and has been the leading scorer for the Seahawks the last three years. Tolan also excelled in basketball and softball, as she is a two-time First Team All-Bayside Conference member in softball. Tolan, who is on the honor roll at Decatur, is the daughter of Daniel and Sheree Tolan of Ocean City.

Winstead, a defender, is a one-year member of the soccer team at Myrtle Beach. She helped the Seahawks, ranked fourth in the state, to a 15-2 record her senior year and also earned the team’s Coach’s Award. Winstead attended West Ashely High School in Charleston her freshman to junior years and helped them win the 4A state championship her sophomore season. She earned the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player with 17 goals her freshman campaign. She played for the Grand Strand Girls Soccer Club in the fall of 2003 and was a part of the Olympic Development Program from 1998-2002. Winstead was a member of the National Honor Society and received the Palmetto Fellowship Award in 2004. She is the daughter of P.G. and Lynn Winstead.

Coastal (10-9-2) finished the 2003 season as co-champions of the Big South Conference. The Chants open the 2004 season Friday, Aug. 27 against Wofford College at 4 p.m., at the CCU Soccer Field.
