Box Score Women's Soccer Falls to Georgia Southern 1-0 More Information:
A penalty-kick goal by Georgia Southern's Vikki Corbitt in the 72nd minute was the difference Sept. 24, as the Eagles (2-3-1) defeated the Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (4-6-1) 1-0 in Statesboro, Ga.
Georgia Southern had a great chance to score only five minutes into the game when Ellen Shuler’s shot hit the crossbar. Junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) had an open look two minutes later, but her shot was saved by Laura-Ashley Harris. Coastal also had looks from freshman Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) and junior Rachel Devine (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) on crosses in the box, but failed to score on either chance. For the half, Coastal outshot Georgia Southern 11-6 and had seven shots-on-goal.
Georgia Southern had another point blank chance with 25 minutes left when Katy Znosko's shot from 10 yards was saved by sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary). With 18:28 left, Coastal had a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick from Corbitt. She put it through the net, giving Georgia Southern a 1-0 lead. Coastal had a couple of late chances, including a corner kick with a minute left, but the Lady Chanticleers were held scoreless.
Coastal had a 22-13 shot advantage, while Harris had 13 saves for the second straight game for GSU. Georgia Southern also had a 4-3 corner-kick advantage.
Stoll had seven saves for Coastal in defeat. Parsons had seven shots on goal, while senior Leah Barrett (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) added four.
Coastal will now take eight days off before facing VMI Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field.
