The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (5-11, 1-4 Big South) had a 10-point lead with 10:27 left, but Charleston Southern University (8-9, 3-2 Big South) outscored the Lady Chanticleers 25-9 the rest of the way and earned a 56-50 victory Jan. 29, in Kimbel Arena.

Coastal had the first three points of the game on a triple from sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill), but Charleston Southern went on a 7-0 run, as a jumper from Keena Wicker at 16:56 gave CSU a 7-3 lead. Coastal regained the lead at 14:20 off of five straight points from junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.). Coastal tied the game two more times in the first half, the latest at 4:26 on a layup from Kim Turner that knotted the game at 22. A Deborah Cherry layup at 2:10 helped the Lady Buccaneers to a 24-23 halftime lead.

Young had eight first-half points and five rebounds, while Dill and Turner added five. Wicker led Charleston Southern with 11 points.

Coastal started the second half on a 13-3 run that gave the Lady Chants at 36-27 lead. Dill had five of those points, while Turner hit back-to-back jumpers in the run. Coastal had the lead as high as 41-31 at 10:27 on a three-pointer from junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.). Charleston Southern would then start its run, cutting the lead to 43-38 at 6:37 on two free throws from Wicker. CSU would get within one on a layup by Tina Broyhill and took the lead at 4:03 on two freebies from LaKeshia Bryant. Charleston Southern ended an 11-0 run at 2:17 on a Bryant free throw. Coastal would cut the lead to three with 20 seconds left on an old-fashion three-point play from Turner, but two Bryant free throws with 14 seconds left iced the game.

Young had her first career double-double and had Coastal’s second double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Turner led CCU in scoring with 15 points, while Dill was the third Lady Chant in double figures with 10 points. Senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) had 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Wicker had a game-high 24 points for Charleston Southern, going 9-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line. Bryant added 15 points, seven of them coming from the line.

Coastal was held to 30.8 percent shooting from the field, but the Lady Chants went 6-of-18 from behind the three-point arc. Charleston Southern was 40 percent from the field and 15-of-21 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Bucs outrebounded Coastal 42-38 and had 26 points in the paint.

Coastal travels to Asheville, N.C., to face UNC Asheville Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m., in the Justice Center. Charleston Southern faces Savannah State Wednesday in a non-conference affair.
