HIGH POINT, N.C. – Sophomore Lachlan Cahill (Kiama, Australia, Kiama) scored the game-winning second half goal as Coastal Carolina's men's soccer team (4-7-1, 1-2 Big South) won its first conference game of the season in a 2-0 shutout of High Point (0-8-3, 0-4-1 Big South) on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 12.
The game was scoreless in the first half as Coastal Carolina sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) and High Point freshman keeper Adam Ross played an even first half.
At the intermission the Chanticleers held the 9-5 advantage in shots and were ahead 3-1 in corner kicks.
In the second half, Cahill dented the scoreboard as he tapped in a throw-in (64:22) for the first goal of the afternoon and what would prove to be the game-winning tally. For Cahill it was his third goal and first game-winner of the season.
Just under two minutes later (66:05) Coastal would double its lead as sophomore Daniel O'Brien (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) broke away from the pack and took the feed from senior China Maja (/Piersburg, South Africa/Anchor Comprehensive (Roberts Weslyan)) for the second goal of the day. For O'Brien it was his first tally of the season.
Weant made the lead hold to earn his first win of the season, stopping five shots in the winning effort. The loss went to Ross who saw his record fall to 0-8-3 on the campaign.
For the game, both teams registered 12 shots with High Point holding a slight 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The win ended the Chants three-game losing slide, which was their longest such stretch since Oct. 3-15, 2004 when they dropped four in a row.
Coastal Carolina's men's soccer team now return home to face #17 UNC-Greensboro in a non-conference matchup starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15.
