Box Score Women's Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller over Winthrop 2-1

More Information:

Senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) scored her eighth goal of the season just 57 seconds into overtime to lift the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (11-4, 3-2 Big South) to a 2-1 win over Winthrop University (6-7-1, 1-4 Big South) Oct. 12 in Rock Hill, S.C. in a Big South Conference match.  With the 11th victory this year, Coastal breaks its single-season wins record, which was set in 2003.   The first period was scoreless, with the Lady Chanticleers holding a 11-1 shot advantage.  Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had one save, while Winthrop’s Dimitra Poulous stopped four Lady Chant shots.    Coastal struck first on the scoreboard at the 71st minute as junior Stepheney Gerhardt (Mohawk, N.Y./Ilion (Herkimer C.C.)) scored on a header off a corner-kick by senior Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove).  It was Gerhardt’s second goal of the season, while Fisher assisted on a goal for the third straight game.  Winthrop came right back at the 78th minute.  Michelle Butler beat Stoll from 10 yards out on an assist from Allison Stoltz to tie things up at one. Both teams had chances to score in the second half, but there were great stops by both goalkeepers.  Stoll had five saves in the second frame, while Poulous stopped four CCU shots.   Coastal would go into its third overtime game of the season and the extra frame would end quickly on Parsons’ goal.  Parsons also connected on Coastal’s goal in its other overtime win this season, a 2-1 decision to Wofford Sept. 21.    Stoll stopped six shots to earn her 11th win of the season, with Poulos stopping eight shots.  Coastal held a 22-12 shot advantage, as Gerhardt, Parsons and freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had five shots apiece. Coastal also had the 9-5 corner-kick advantage.   Coastal will host Birmingham-Southern Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field.
