Box Score Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker In Five Games To Winthrop

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina fell to Winthrop recording the first Big South Conference loss during the 2005 season Saturday. The contest between the Lady Chanticleers and Eagles went to five games with scores of: 30-21, 30-28, 18-30, 27-30, and 14-16. CCU now has a record of 11-8 and 6-1 in the Big South Conference and Winthrop is 17-4 and 7-0 in league play.
The first game was controlled by the Lady Chants including a five point streak extending the 25-20 lead to 29-20 after a kill from Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley), the Lady Chants then went on to win the game 30-21. In the second game, Winthrop led 9-8 until a crucial kill by Meyers set CCU on a five point run. The Lady Chants then went on to lead the second game and win, 30-28.
The third game was controlled by the Eagles after a kill by Taryn Surbaugh which broke the 10-6 lead CCU had. Winthrop then went on a six point streak broken up by a kill from Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) and then regained the lead after another kill from Surbaugh setting the Eagles on a seven point run and led them to winning the game, 30-18.
Game five was an even battle between the Lady Chants and the Eagles. At a 14-11 lead by CCU, a kill from Surbaugh led the Eagles to the 16-14 victory.
Katherine Jensen-Spencer (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary/Mississippi) marked her 12th double-double of the season with 32 kills and 16 digs. Jensen-Spencer also tied her career high in kills with 32. Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) added 50 assists and 19 digs in CCU's effort. Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) tallied 12 kills during the match. Meyers added a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Scheible added seven assists for Coastal as well as four kills.
Leading the way for Winthrop was Mary Hock with 23 kills and 15 digs. Tori Grafeman added 18 kills and Taryn Surbaugh recorded 17 kills in the Eagle's victory.
Winthrop recorded 14 total blocks while the Lady Chants had 6. The Eagles also hit an overall .241, while Coastal hit a .213.
CCU will host the College of Charleston in Kimbel Arena Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
