CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina’s volleyball team defeated UNC Wilmington in three straight games Oct. 31. Game scores were 30-16, 30-16, and 30-15. Katherine Jensen-Spencer (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary (Mississippi)) answered with a kill that sent the Lady Chants on a nine-point run. From that point on, the Lady Chants continued to lead the game. After a kill from
Devon West (Sudbury, Ontario, Canada/Lockerby Composite School (Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Tech)) CCU won the first game, 30-16. The Seahawks kept the game close with the Lady Chants in game two as the points went back and forth. Wilmington could not hold on at a 17-12 score in favor of CCU as Jensen-Spencer’s kill gave the Lady Chants eight points to have the 25-13 lead. Wilmington tried to come back, but could not get close enough as Coastal won the second game, 30-16. The final game was a fight at a 5-5 game until UNC Wilmington’s Lynn Hartough had a service error that set CCU on a four-point run. The Seahawks tried to come back as CCU led 11-9 but a kill from
Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) sent the Lady Chants out on a eight point run, leading 18-9. The Seahawks continued to fight but could not get close enough to CCU who won the third game, 30-15. Jensen-Spencer had 14 kills and nine digs in the victory.
Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had 41 assists and eight digs.
Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) added 12 kills for the Lady Chants, while West added 10.
Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) tallied three kills and 15 digs. Leading the Seahawks’ effort was Kate Bennett with seven kills and seven digs. Kristin Maier added seven kills. The Lady Chants had six blocks while the Seahawks had four. CCU had an overall hitting percentage of .328 while UNC Wilmington hit at .019. Coastal will now travel to High Point Friday, Nov. 4 for a 7 p.m., match.
