Western Carolina University (10-3) scored two goals in the first 10:25 and held on for a 2-1 win over the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (10-4) Oct. 8 in Cullowhee, N.C., ending Coastal’s three-game winning streak. Coastal took just over a minute to answer that goal as senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) took a feed from a corner kick by classmate
Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) and beat Alisha Row in the top right corner. It was Parsons’ seventh goal of the year. Western outshot Coastal 12-6 in the first half and had a 3-1 corner-kick advantage. Stoll had one save for the Lady Chanticleers, with two saves by the Catamounts’ Row. There were no goals scored in the second half, but Coastal had its best chance to tie it up in the 68th minute. Parsons collected a turnover from Row and shot from 20 yards out, but her shot skimmed the crossbar. CCU's Stoll also saved a goal with a diving stop of Dittmer’s shot. Coastal had a corner kick in the last five minutes, but couldn’t get the tying goal across. For the game, Western outshot Coastal 15-10 with a 6-4 corner-kick advantage. Stoll made three saves on the game for the Lady Chanticleers. Parsons led the team with five shots-on-goal, while Monroe had three. Monroe’s four-game goals scored streak was snapped. Coastal’s five-game winning streak over Southern Conference opponents also was broken. Coastal will jump back in the Big South schedule Wednesday, Oct. 12, against Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C.
