The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (2-1) scored only 22 points in the second half as UNC Wilmington (2-0) shot 53.8 percent for the game in a 75-51 victory over the Lady Chanticleers Nov. 29 in Wilmington, N.C.

Coastal scored the first four points of the game on layups by sophomore C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) and junior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill). UNCW then went on an 11-1 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes, capped by a layup by Michaela Vezenkova. The game was back-and-forth until the Lady Chants went on a 10-3 run to take a 29-22 lead on a three by senior Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman). UNCW ended

the half on a 10-0 run in the last 3:25 to take a 32-29 lead at the break.

Junior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) led the Lady Chants with 12 first-half points, going 5-of-8 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range. Rose added two three pointers and had four rebounds and

three assists. For UNCW, Sasha Taylor had 11 points and nine first-half rebounds.

Coastal would trail by three on a Yates three pointer at 18:05, but the Seahawk lead would be double digits at 16:41 (44-34) on a layup by Candace Walker. The lead would be 15 at 9:59 on a jumper from Denise Lawrence and at 20 at 7:53 on a Shade Smith layup. Coastal hit just eight field goals in the second 20 minutes and was 2-of-9 from three-point range.

Yates led Coastal with 15 points on the night. Dill added nine points, while Rose had seven rebounds. For UNCW, Taylor had a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Coastal finished the game shooting 34.5 percent, while the Seahawks had 28 field goals. UNCW also outrebounded the Lady Chants 45-28.

Coastal hosts Furman Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. in Kimbel Arena.

NOTES: UNC Wilmington now leads the season series 19-2... Coastal was outrebounded for the first time this season... Ware tied a career high in points with seven... Coastal had five blocks on the night, two each from sophomore Joanna Pekonen (Lapeenranta, Finland/Lafayette) and senior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.).
