Box Score Volleyball Falls To Winthrop In Another Dramatic Five Game Match

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coastal Carolina’s volleyball team fell to Winthrop in five game for the second time this season, in game scores of 29-31, 30-24, 36-34, 25-30, and 11-15. CCU is has an overall record of 17-10 and a record of 11-2 in the Big South Conference. Winthrop is now 23-4 and 12-0 in league play.   In the first game, the Eagles had a 5-0 advantage until a kill from Katherine Jensen-Spencer (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary (Mississippi)) got CCU into the game. The Lady Chanticleers eventually tied the game at 12 on kill from Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif. /El Toro) and CCU took a 14-12 margin and pushed it to 18-14. The Eagles responded with a kill from Siera Reynolds and went on a four-point run to tie it at 18, ended by a kill from Jensen-Spencer. WU tied the game 19-19 but Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif. /Temecula Valley) responded with a kill that sent the Lady Chants to three straight points. Winthrop battled back after a kill from Caitlin Cleary that led the Eagles on a three point run to tie the game. Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) got the Lady Chants a two point lead after a kill assisted by Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif. /El Toro) but WU fought back and kept the game close. At a 27-27 game, WU edged ahead by a point, but CCU tied the game after an attack error from Winthrop’s Chandra Ginest. The Eagles responded to the Lady Chant’s point by a kill from Reynolds. CCU proved it would not be denied after a kill from Meyers that made the game 29-29. After a kill from Ginest, Winthrop went on to win the first game, 31-29.   Game two, CCU had the 4-1 lead until a kill from Taryn Surbaugh got the Eagles in the game. At a 7-5 game in favor of WU a block from Hampton helped CCU grab two quick points to tie the game, 7-7. The Eagles then had a double block by Surbaugh and Ginest that sent them to the 14-11 lead. Coastal fought back with a kill from Meyers which sent them on a five- point run for the lead 15-14. The Eagles quickly tied the game after a kill from Mary Hock which was quickly answered by the Lady Chants grabbing two more points after an attack error by Cleary. Jensen-Spencer helped the Lady Chants get the three-point advantage to a 21-16 lead. CCU continued to lead 22-16 until a block from Cleary and Tori Grafeman got the Eagles back into the game. The Lady Chants fought hard and continued with a 24-20 lead until a kill from Hock that closed in on the Lady Chants. As the Lady Chants led 29-23, WU tried to make a come back, but CCU won the second game, 30-24.   The third game was a battle between WU and CCU as nobody could get a strong lead until the 6-3 lead in favor of Winthrop. After a kill from Meyers, the Lady Chants got back on the board to close in on WU. After Meyers’ kill, the Lady Chants went on a four point-run to control the lead 7-6. The Eagles quickly responded and tied the game. The Lady Chants continued to fight and took a 10-8 lead after a kill from Jensen-Spencer. WU responded and tried to close in until a service error from Hock kept CCU in the lead. At a 12-11 lead in Coastal’s favor, a kill from Meyers sent the Lady Chants to two points for the 14-12 lead. The Eagles tried to battle back to a 15-13 game in favor of CCU but another pivotal kill from Meyers started Coastal on a six-point run for the 19–13 lead. The Eagles fought with the Lady Chants until a 19-16 lead by Coastal when Jensen-Spencer’s kill kept the Lady Chants in the game. WU fought back and brought the game to a 20-20 game when a kill from Grafeman helped the Eagles edge out to a point lead until CCU fought back to tie the game at 21. At a 22-21 lead for WU, Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North ) answered back with a kill to tie the game and send the Lady Chants on a two-point streak to lead the game 23-22 until the Eagles answered back for the tie. Jensen-Spencer answered back with a kill and helped the Lady Chants to a 24-23 lead, but they could not hold on. The Eagles battled back to tie the game, but after another pivotal kill by Scheible, CCU led the game by a point, that was soon tied by WU at 25. A kill by Meyers sent Coastal on a two-point run to the 27-25 lead; the Eagles came back for the tie after a set error by Hampton. At a 27-28 deficit, a kill from Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) gave the Lady Chants another two-point run to make the game 29-28 in favor of CCU until the Eagles tied at 29. At game point for the Eagles, a kill by Jensen-Spencer tied the score at 30. The battling continued until a 32-31 lead for WU when a kill by Meyers tied the third game. At another game point for the Eagles, Meyers had another kill making a dramatic 34-34 game. After a kill from Jensen-Spencer, CCU won the third game 36-34.   The dramatic back and forth battling continued early in game four, until Winthrop controlled with a 6-2 lead. A kill by Jensen-Spencer sent the Lady Chants on a five-point run to lead 7-6, until a kill from Winthrop’s Hock tied the game, 7-7. WU continued to run with the game after another kill by Hock on a three-point-streak for the 10–8 lead. CCU responded, but WU maintained control at an 11-9 lead until a service error from Hock helped the Lady Chants close in to a 10-11 game. WU continued to lead the fourth game 14-11 until a kill from Jensen-Spencer got CCU back in the game, but the Eagles responded quickly and claimed the 15-12 lead. At an 18-13 lead by WU, a crucial kill by Thompson led the Lady Chants to straight three-points, ended after a service error by Scheible. At a 19-16 deficit, Jensen-Spencer got the Lady Chants back into the game with a kill that was immediately answered by the Eagles for the 20-16 lead. Another kill by Jensen-Spencer showed the Eagles the Lady Chants weren’t done yet as they edged closer with an 18-22 game. A kill from Scheible helped CCU at a 22-26 game in favor of WU. The kill set Coastal on a two-point run for a 24-26 difference, but the Eagles responded for the 27-24 lead. WU went on to win the fourth game 30-25.   In the fifth and final game, CCU took immediate action to a 3-0 lead which was broken up by a kill from Hock. After two points for the Eagles, CCU gained control back for the 4-2 lead. After a WU service error, CCU took the 6-2 lead. After a kill from Surbaugh, the Eagles ran for four points for the 6-5 in favor of Coastal, until a kill from Jensen-Spencer brought the Lady Chants up to 7-5. The drama continued until Jensen-Spencer broke the 7-7 tie to take the lead with a kill assisted by Hampton. The excitement continued at a 10-10 tie when a kill from Winthrop’s Grafeman and Surbaugh grabbed the 11-10 lead. The Eagles broke away with a13-10 lead until a kill from Obert got CCU back in the game. CCU could not hold on in the fifth game as Winthrop won the fifth game, 15-11.   Leading the Lady Chants effort was Jensen-Spencer with her 18^th double-double of the season with 28 kills and 19 digs. Hampton had 62 assists and 12 digs. Meyers added a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs.   Hock led the Eagles in the victory with 25 kills and 13 digs. Grafeman added 15 kills in the Eagles victory.   CCU will now travel to Charleston Southern for a 7 p.m. match Nov. 11.
