Coastal Carolina’s (11-9-1, 5-2 Big South) men’s soccer team had a successful 2005 season where it won its third Big South Tournament title in a row and made its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. This is the fourth year in a row where Coastal fell to an eventually NCAA Final Four team in the NCAA tournament, this time falling to Clemson to 2-0 on Nov. 18.
An Outstanding Career
Jordie Hughes (Victoria, B.C./Spectrum) ended his Coastal career ranking in the top-five in three offensive categories for CCU. With 29 points this season, Hughes totaled 120 points in his distinguished career, good for fourth place. Hughes’ seven assists this season moved him into a tie for fifth place all-time in assists with 26. Hughes had 11 goals this season, upping his career total to 47, which tied him with former Chanticleer Eric Schmitt for the second most goals scored at Coastal.
Another MVP Performance
Senior Joseph Kabwe (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Sakubva (Lindsey Wilson)) added to his Most Valuable Player awards as he was named the MVP of the Big South Tournament. This was the second time Kabwe had been named MVP of a tournament this season and fourth time this season he had been named to an All-Tournament team. Further, Kabwe was the third Chant in as many years to be named the MVP of the Big South Tournament. In 2003, Joseph Ngwenya was named the MVP and in 2004 Boyzzz Khumalo was named the MVP. Kabwe overall was the eighth Chanticleer to be named the MVP of the Tournament since 1984.
Four Selected to the All-Tournament Team
Coastal Carolina had four players selected to the Big South All-Tournament team. Besides Kabwe, other Chants selected include senior Jordie Hughes, sophomore Patrick Robertson (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) and freshman Kyle Russell (Elgin, Ill./St. Charleston North). CCU has had 59 All-Tournament Selections in Big South Tournament play since 1984.
Six Selected to All-Big South Teams
The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team had six players selected to the 2005 All-Big South Conference Teams, the conference announced at the Big South Tournament banquet, Nov. 9 in High Point, N.C. Seniors Jordie Hughes and Peter Louis (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) were named to the first team. Senior Joseph Kabwe and sophomore Lachlan Cahill (Kiama, Australia/Kiama) were named to the second team. Freshman Kyle Russell and Brad Stisser (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) are both part of the All-Freshman team. Hughes also was selected to the Big South’s All-Academic Team.
Hughes was an All-Big South’s first team selection in each of the last three seasons. This season, Hughes led Coastal in goals (11) and points (29) and was tied for the team lead in assists (7). He totaled 120 points in his distinguished career, which was good for fourth place. His 26 career assists puts him in fifth place, while his 47 career goals was good for a tie for second on CCU’s career goal scoring list. Hughes also had a 3.41 grade-point average in marketing, leading to his selection on the Big South’s All-Academic Team.
Louis played in all 21 games and started 17 to earn All-Big South First team honors for the first time in his career. He keyed a CCU defense that only allowed 1.45 goals per game. Louis scored a goal against Northeastern, Sept. 1 and tallied an assist against VMI on Oct. 29.
Kabwe’s selection to the second team was his first as a Chanticleer. He was tied for second on the team in goals (7), second in assists (6) and tied for the lead in game-winning goals (3). Jordie Hughes ended the season fourth in the conference in points (29) and assists (7) while teammate Joseph Kabwe was ninth (20) in points and eighth in assists (6). Hughes’ 11 goals this season tied him for third in the conference and Kabwe placed seventh with seven goals. Lachlan Cahill was tied for fourth in assists (7).
Sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) was second in the conference in shutouts (3) and goals- against average (1.16).
The Honors Continue
Joseph Kabwe continued to bring in the honors as he was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, for the week ending Nov. 13.
Weant is the Man
Sophomore Aaron Weant with three wins in the Big South Tournament this season improved his record to a perfect 6-0 in his career in Big South Tournament play. Also over the last two years Weant has logged 521:08 minutes in goal with 13 saves and a miniscule goals-against average of 0.17.
He Saves Himself for the Right Moment
Sophomore John Ferguson (Dunlap, Ill./ Dunlap) has two career assists but amazingly enough both were game-winning assists in Big South Tournament play. Ferguson first assist was against UNC Asheville in 2004 to senior Jordie Hughes for a 1-0 win. Then in the 2005 championship game Ferguson again came up with the feed to win the game 1-0, this time to senior Joseph Kabwe.
Overtime Heroics
Senior Joseph Kabwe scored the only goal Coastal would need in overtime to propel CCU to its third consecutive Big South Tournament title this time over Winthrop 1-0. It is also the fifth time in as many years that Coastal is going dancing in the NCAA Tournament.
Hughes Named Academic All-District
The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team’s Jordie Hughes was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III First Team University Men’s Soccer team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Nov. 3. Hughes had a grade point average of 3.41 in marketing.
Just in Time
Senior Jordie Hughes scored the game-winning goal for Coastal at 88:27 to catapult CCU into the championship game of the Big South Tournament for the fifth straight year. The 2-1 win over VMI improved the Chanticleers to 6-0 against VMI all-time.
The Hughes Show
Forward Jordie Hughes led the offensive attack with two goals as CCU downed High Point 4-0 in the first round of the Big South Tournament.
Hughes Named the Player of the Week
Senior Jordie Hughes became the second Chanticleer during the season to take home Player of the Week honors from the Big South, as he was named for the week ending Nov. 6. Hughes had five points in the Nov. 5 CCU victory over Liberty.
Weant Takes Control
Sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Weant was at the heart of Coastal’s seven-game winning streak. In those seven games, Weant had a perfect 7-0 record with a goals-against-average of 0.60 while recording 15 saves, two shutouts and a save percentage of .789. Weant has now registered eight career shutouts, good for sixth all-time on Coastal career goal keeping list.
Balance is the Key
This season, CCU’s soccer team had 16 different players tally points. This is not a new idea for the Chants as last season Coastal also had 16 different players get in the scoring column. The 2003 season saw 15 different CCU soccer players score.
Thinking of the Number 12
When Coastal got 12 or more shots in any single game during the 2005 season it went 9-2-1. In comparison, when the Chants registered less than 12 shots in a game they were 2-7.
The Robertson Factor
In games in which sophomore Patrick Robertson (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) scored points this season, Coastal was 4-1. Further, CCU is 5-1-1 over the last two years in point scoring games for Robertson.
Score First=Victories
Coastal went 9-0-1 when it scored first this season. This is not a new trend, as last season the Chants were 9-1-1 in games in which they scored first. In 2002 and 2003, CCU went a combined 37-4-1 in games in which they scored first.
Score Late, Score Often
Coastal scored 41 goals as a team this season. But out of those 41 goals, 29 of them came in the second half and overtime. That means Coastal scored 71 percent of its goals, as a team, after the first half had ended. In comparison, last season CCU scored 48 percent of its goals in the second half and later (25 out of 52). In 2003, the Chanticleers scored nearly 55 percent of its goals after halftime (40 out of 72).
Night Owls
The Chants went 6-3-1 in games that started after 5 p.m. this season.
He’s Like Money in the Bank
Over his four years at Coastal, when senior Jordie Hughes scored points, the Chants simply won games. CCU was a staggering 32-6-1 in his career, including a 7-2-1 record during the 2005 season, when Hughes put points on the scoreboard.
Beat Them in All Phases of the Game
During Coastal seven-game winning streak the Chants beat their opponents in all phases of the game. They outscored them 18-5, out shot them 108-58 and held a corner kick advantage of 38-21. This was a recurring theme for CCU. In its 11 wins, Coastal held a 35-11 advantage in goals, 166-95 advantage in shots and a 61-32 advantage in corner kicks.
Coastal Seniors Rise to the Occasion
Coastal Carolina’s soccer team celebrated senior day and its last regular season game at CCU Soccer Field in style as seniors Jordie Hughes and Joseph Kabwe each had big days. Hughes scored each of CCU’s two first half goals and assist on the third while Kabwe had assists on all the Chanticleer goals. The Chants goalkeeper Aaron Weant had two saves in picking up his fifth conference win of the season. Before the game, the four Coastal seniors; Hughes, Kabwe, China Maja (Piertsburg, South Africa/Anchor Comprehensive (Roberts Wesleyan)) and Peter Louis, were honored in a presentation with plaques.
Pop the Cork
Coastal Carolina men’s soccer coach Shaun Docking, with his victory over VMI, won his 100th game at Coastal and his 120th game overall.
Streak Reaches Four Games
A header by sophomore Patrick Robertson got the Chanticleers on the scoreboard in the first half as Coastal held on for a 4-2 win over conference rival Virginia Military Institute on Oct. 29. The win ran Coastal’s conference winning streak to four games. Others to tally goals for the Chants include seniors Jordie Hughes and Joseph Kabwe and sophomore Dominic Rossi (Kellyville, Australia/Oakhill College (Macquarie)).
Weant Takes Home Some Hardware
Coastal Carolina’s goalkeeper Aaron Weant was named the Big South’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 23. Weant recorded two conference road wins on the week with seven saves and a goals-against average of 0.49. He became the first goalkeeper and the first Chanticleer to capture the award this season.
Rolling Along
Coastal Carolina ran its conference winning streak to three games as late game heroics on a header by sophomore Robert Holstein (Middleburg, Fla./St. John’s County/Queens Univ.-Charlotte) off the feed from senior China Maja gave CCU a 1-0 overtime victory over host UNC Asheville on Oct. 22. For the game, the Chants out shot the Bulldogs 17-7 with a corner kick advantage of 11-2 as well.
Coming From Behind
After trailing by a goal going into the break against Winthrop on Oct. 19, CCU’s offense rallied and scored three goals in a fifteen minute period of time in the second half. Sophomore Lachlan Cahill tied the game up at one off the dish from senior Jordie Hughes. Cahill had the assist on the game-winning goal by sophomore Patrick Robertson just over three minutes later. And Hughes capped off the scoring off the misfired shot attempt from sophomore Robert Holstein as Coastal went on to win 3-1 over the Eagles. It was only the second time CCU had trailed at the break and came back to win a game this season.
Almost....Almost
When Coastal Carolina squared off against #17 UNC-Greensboro on Oct. 15, nobody expected much but the Chants themselves. But that faith in themselves almost proved to be enough as CCU lost 1-0 to the Spartans. The only tally of the game was an own goal that Coastal inadvertently knocked in its own net in the first five minutes of action. Senior Jordie Hughes had several good looks at tying the game in the last eight minutes but Greensboro held on for a 1-0 victory.
The Slide is Stopped
Coastal Carolina soccer team snapped its two-game conference losing streak and three game overall slide with a 2-0 victory over High Point on Oct. 12. Sophomore Daniel O’Brien (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and freshman Kyle Russell picked up assists on the Lachlan Cahill game-winning goal. O’Brien tallied the insurance goal, his first of the season, for Coastal two minutes later on the feed from senior China Maja. Sophomore Aaron Weant picked up his first win of the season in the game.
A Tough One
Coastal lost its third game in a row this time falling to Davidson 3-1. CCU tied the game on a goal from sophomore Patrick Robertson off the feed from Lachlan Cahill. The tie did not last as Coastal soon was playing a man down as Robertson was given a red card for running into the Davidson goalie and thrown out of the game. From that point on Davidson took advantage, scoring two late goals to make the final score 3-1.
A Heartbreaker
Coastal lost a heartbreaker to Radford 2-1 despite out shooting the Highlanders 24-6 including 8-3 shots on goals. Senior Jordie Hughes led both teams with eight shots and scored the Chants goal. CCU had several near misses including a shot by Hughes on a break away that hit off the crossbar and two shots on consecutive possessions by freshman Brad Stisser that went just wide. The loss fell to Nowak who saw his record even at 3-3. Hughes moved into a fourth place tie with former Chant Hilmar Arnason for career goals (40) with his tally in the game.
Panthers Prevail
Birmingham-Southern got off to an early 2-0 lead on Coastal only to see the Chanticleers cut the deficit to a goal on a Dominic Rossi tally. After another BSC goal gave the Panthers another back their two goal lead, Coastal again fought back to cut the lead in half late on the Jordie Hughes goal off a penalty kick. But that was as close as the Chants would get as Birmingham-Southern won the Big South Conference match up 3-2. For the game Hughes had a goal and an assist.
Who Loves Tournaments?
Before the start of conference season, Coastal Carolina senior midfielder Joseph Kabwe had an unreal streak of making three of the four All-Tournaments teams for CCU. Kabwe finished his strong non-conference play by being named co-MVP of the Coastal Carolina/adidas Classic.

Freshman Djamel Bekka (Tulsa, Okla./Union) and sophomore Lachlan Cahill each had three shots in the game including two shots on goal each to lead CCU. Coastal was named the Co-Champions of the Tournament along with CofC.
Kabwe Steps it Up
Senior Joseph Kabwe scored the game tying with just over three minutes remaining in regulation (86:59) and then tallied the game-winning goal with just under two minutes remaining in the first overtime (98:29) to propel Coastal Carolina men's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Virginia Commonwealth on the first night of the Coastal Carolina/adidas Classic. Other Chants to score in the game include the Australian duo of Lachlan Cahill and Dominic Rossi. Rossi had a goal and Cahill totaled a goal and an assist.
