Box Score Women's Basketball Drops 61-52 Decision to High Point More Information:
The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (7-13, 3-6 Big South) had a lead as late as 3:47 in the game, but High Point University (11-11, 6-3) outscored the Lady Chanticleers 12-2 to end the contest and defeat CCU 61-52 Feb. 15, in High Point, N.C.
High Point opened the game with a 7-2 run, capped by a free throw from Emily Mills at 16:13. A jumper from junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.) cut the lead to 9-8 with 15:07 remaining. High Point’s Katie O’Dell had four straight points to extend the advantage to 13-8, but a layup from sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) and a Tyler free throw cut it to 13-11 at 13:28. The Panthers made it an eight-point lead, 21-13, at 9:21 on a jumper from Charlena Martin. Coastal started to cut into the eight-point advantage as a 6-0 run was capped on a layup from junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) at 3:39. HPU moved the lead to five at 2:38, but a three-point play from junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) made it 29-27 High Point. Coastal tied the game for the first time on a Turner jumper with 49 seconds left, as the two teams went into the lockerroom deadlocked.
Dill led Coastal with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Tyler added seven first-half points. Raven Truslow and O’Dell had nine points for High Point.
Coastal started the second half on a 4-0 run on jumpers from Young and Turner. High Point tied the game at 37 on an O’Dell layup. The Panthers extended the lead to 41-38 at 13:41 on a layup from Emily Mills, but an 8-0 run over the next 1:56 made it 46-41 Coastal at 11:21. The run was ended on a fast-break layup from Tyler. High Point scored the next five points, but a Dill layup gave CCU a 48-46 lead with 8:09 to go. Katie Ralls hit a big three for the Panthers at 6:18 to get a 49-48 lead. Turner gave Coastal the lead back at 4:24. A steal and layup from Candyce Sellers gave High Point the lead for good at 3:47. With the lead at four, Turner made a 10-footer at 2:13 to pull to 54-52, but that would be the last points the Lady Chants would score. Coastal missed four field goals and two free throws, while High Point went 5-of-6 from the line to ice the game.
Turner led Coastal with 17 points and made it a double-double with 11 rebounds. It was Coastal’s second double-double of the season. Dill added 16 points, a career-high and seven boards. Coastal outrebounded High Point 44-35, but committed 29 turnovers.
Coastal also did not make a three-pointer in the game, going 0-4 from long distance.
O’Dell had a game high 21 points for High Point and Martin added 14 points.
