Box Score Women's Basketball Falls to Liberty 69-50 More Information:
Liberty University (19-5, 11-0 Big South) outscored the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (8-14, 4-7 Big South) 38-27 in the second half as the Lady Flames spoiled the upset bid of the Lady Chanticleers 69-50 Feb. 21 in Conway, S.C.
Coastal and Liberty played a tight first half, as Liberty went on a 6-0 run late to build a 31-23 halftime lead. Liberty led by eight, 15-3, with 15:38 to go, but Coastal cut it to three on a three-pointer by junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) with 13:44 left. Liberty got the lead back to seven on a jumper from Kristal Tharp at 9:20, but Coastal went on a 9-0 run in 1:55 to take a 21-19 lead. The run was capped by a three-pointer from senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch). A 6-0 run by the Lady Flames made it 25-21 Liberty, but the big run was at the end of the half. After two Young free throws, a three-point play from Egle Smigelskaite made it 28-23 at 3:10. Two free throws from Katie Feenstra and another Smigelskaite free throw with 18 seconds left gave Liberty a 31-23 lead.
Feenstra had 13 points and eight rebounds in the first half for the Flames. For Coastal, Young had eight points and was 3-of-4 from the line. Coastal also was 4-of-9 from three-point range.
Liberty extended the lead to 10 at 17:53 on a Feenstra layup. Coastal got it as close at eight, 45-37, on a free throw from junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.), but Liberty went on a 9-0 run which was capped by a free throw from Rima Margeviciute at 8:28. The Lady Flames got the lead to 20 on two occasions in the second half and won its 12th straight game.
Coastal was led in scoring by Young, who came off the bench to score 15 points and add three assists. Brown added 14 points, going 3-of-6 from three-point range. Sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) led the Lady Chants with four assists.
Feenstra had 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting, while adding 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Margeviciute had nine points, while Daina Staugatieine had nine rebounds.
Coastal was 15-of-49 from the field (30.6 percent) and hit seven threes. Liberty was 48 percent from the field and outrebounded Coastal 46-20.
Coastal will travel to Savannah, Ga., to face Savannah State University Thursday, Feb. 24, in a non-conference affair. The game starts at 2 p.m., which is a recent change from the original 7 p.m., start. Liberty hosts High Point Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
