Box Score Women's Basketball Drops 72-43 Contest to UNC Asheville More Information:
The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (5-12, 1-5 Big South) lost its third straight game in Big South play, falling to UNC Asheville (12-7, 4-2 Big South) 72-43 Feb. 5, in Asheville, N.C. Coastal was outscored by the Bulldogs 45-23 in the second half.
Asheville came out and built a 14-5 lead in the first 5:28, capped off by a three-point play from Kristal Hood. Coastal then cut that lead to 14-11 at 13:21 on a three-pointer from senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch). At 11:40, junior Demaria Young’s (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) three made it 19-14, but Ashevile quickly made it a double-digit deficit, as a Hood layup at 8:35 put the Bulldogs up 25-14. Coastal trimmed the lead to 27-20 at half at junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) hit a layup and two free throws in the last 2:12.
Brown and Turner each had six first-half points for Coastal, while Young grabbed four rebounds. The Lady Chanticleers were 4-of-8 from three-point range, but just 7-of-22 overall from the field. Hood had nine points to lead UNCA.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a key 11-0 run in the first 3:42. Amanda Elder had six of those points and a three-point play from Stacy Sheppard capped it. Coastal could get no closer than 13 points on four occasions, the latest on a Young layup with 3:53 left, but Asheville ended the game on an 18-2 run that was only stopped by a layup from sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) with 26 seconds left.
Young led Coastal with 10 points, while Dill added nine. Brown had eight points and eight rebounds. Coastal was 31.4 percent from the field and 6-of-18 from three-point range.
Elder was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer with 14 points. She led four Asheville players in double figures, as Sheppard had 13, Andrea Clapp had 12 and Hood added 10. The Bulldogs had 40 points in the paint and 30 points off of Coastal’s 32 turnovers.
Coastal hosts Birmingham-Southern Monday, Feb. 7, at 5 p.m., in the first part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The game can be heard on THE TEAM 93.9 FM.
