Fueled by a 20-4 run to start the second half, the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (6-12, 2-5 Big South) snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Birmingham-Southern College (7-12, 2-5 Big South) 55-42 Feb. 7, at Kimbel Arena. Coastal had a plus-18 rebounding margin and hit six three-pointers.

Birmingham-Southern forced the Lady Chanticleers into early turnovers and built a 17-9 lead with 12:25 to go. Coastal made a mini 6-0 run as a jumper from junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.) at 9:59 made it 17-15 Panthers. Coastal tied the game at 17 at 7:06 on a Tyler layup and then both teams went into a scoring funk. A Tyler jumper and a Stacey Anthony three-pointer from Birmingham-Southern were the only made field goals in the last seven minutes.

Tyler led Coastal with eight points in the first half. Junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) had seven first-half rebounds. Anthony had 11 first-half points for the Panthers. Coastal outrebounded BSC 20-14 in the first stanza.

Coastal started the second half with two free throws from freshman C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) at 19:13. Sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) hit a three at 18:41, giving CCU a 26-22 lead. Senior Lucia Popovici’s (Edmonton, Alberta/Jasper Place) made it 28-22. After Anthony hit two free throws, Coastal scored 10 unanswered, capped by a Tyler layup at 15:21. Reba Ross stopped the run with a layup at 14:56, but senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) hit a three, giving Coastal a 41-26 lead at 14:40. Birmingham-Southern cut the lead to 41-34 at 10:17 on free throws from LaWanda Young, but a 9-0 run all but sealed the win for the Lady Chants. Tyler’s three at 6:45 gave CCU a 50-34 lead.

Dill and Tyler led Coastal with 15 points, while Brown added 11 points and nine rebounds. Dill set her career high, while Tyler tied her mark. Young had 10 rebounds and four assists. Coastal shot 40.7 percent for the game, the best since Jan. 5 in a win over Coker.

CCU outrebounded the Panthers 43-25, its highest rebounding margin of the year and its second highest rebounding total this season. Three players had eight or more rebounds, including sophomore Vanessa Laug’s (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) career-high eight.

Coastal won without juniors Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman), who has missed the last four games and junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.), who was unavailable for the first time this season with an injury.

Birmingham-Southern was led by Anthony’s 13 points. Crystal Reed had a game-high 11 rebounds and four steals.

Coastal hosts Winthrop Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m., while Birmingham-Southern hosts Radford at 2 p.m., the same day.
