Softball Defeats Harvard, 7-1, in the Carolina Classic More Information:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior pitcher Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman)) pitched a fantastic game, going seven innings and only giving up one run in Coastal Carolina softball team's 7-1 win over Harvard on the second day of the Carolina Classic on Saturday, Mar. 26.
Coastal took the early lead in the first inning as senior Delane Grainger (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral (Phoenix College) opened the game by slapping a single through the left side. Freshman Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle's Landing) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners over a base. Junior leftfielder Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granda) followed with a ringing double over the centerfielder head to give the Lady Chanticleers an early 2-0.
The Lady Chanticleers increased its lead in the fourth inning as sophomore Kim Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) reached on a fielder choice and came in to score on the two-run homerun off the bat of freshman Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) for a 4-0 CCU lead.
Harvard got on the board in the fifth inning as two out double by Cara Woodard scored Rachel Murray for Harvard's first run of the game.
Ashley Gerdts put the final touches on the CCU victory hitting a three-run homerun in the seventh inning to give Coastal a 7-1 lead. It was her team-leading third home run of the season. Johnson raised her record to 2-1 on the season.
Coastal's softball team will play its second game of the afternoon as it takes on Penn State at 4:30 p.m. at the Carolina Classic.
