Box Score Softball Defeats Penn State 2-0 in Carolina Classic More Information:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior righthanded pitcher Brittany Nelson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) shutout Penn State as Coastal Carolina softball team(14-14) won their second consecutive game and its second game of the day, 2-0 at the Carolina Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Coastal got all the offense it would need in the second inning as junior Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown (Furman)) singled through the left side to open the frame. She was sacrificed to second by junior Kim Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magonolia)). Junior rightfielder Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) pinch ran for Johnson. Freshman Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) and junior Delane Grainger (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral (Phoenix College)) walked back to back to load the bases.
Freshman Alison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle's Landing)) followed with a ringing double over the rightfielders head to plate the first and second runs of the game and give the the Lady Chanticleers an early 2-0..
Penn State threatened in the third as they had first and third with two outs but Nelson was up to the challenge as she recorded one of her three strikeouts to get herself out of the jam.
Penn State again threatened in the fifth as Jen Williams singled with out. But Nelson picked her off first for the second out of the frame to again get herself out of trouble.
The Nittany Lions made one last push in the seventh inning as Danielle Chavez doubled to put a runner on second base with one out. Chavez advanced to third on a bunt single from teammate Williams to put runners on the corners. A stolen base by Williams put both runners in scoring position with less than two outs. The tension slowly began to mount as PSU looked to be on the verge of breaking through on their many wasted scoring opportunties from earlier in the game.
Jen Acunto followed by hitting a single to deep in the hole at short, but Williams was thrown out at the plate by first baseman Cillis as she attempted to score from third base for the second out of the inning.
Nelson finished off the game by getting rightfielder Meghan Wolfer to hit into a fielder choice that forced Acunto out at second to end the game and preserve the shutout and the victory.
Nelson raises her record to 9-4 on the season.
Coastal will play one game tommorrow, Mar. 26 as it takes on Harvard at 10 a.m.
