Charleston, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team (9-17, 4-10 Bog South) lost a heartbreaker to Charleston Southern (13-14, 7-7 Big South), 63-61, as Charleston Southern’s senior guard LaKeisha Bryant’s layup with six seconds left in the game sealed the victory.

A seesaw battle between the two teams saw CSU with a mere one-point lead at halftime, 30-29. The game was tied 12 times, and the largest lead by either team was a six-point lead held by Charleston Southern at 13-7. Junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis (Hiwassee C.C.)) had 10 points at intermission for Coastal while Bryant led Charleston Southern with 11 points at the break. Both teams shot well in the first half as Coastal shot nearly 45 percent (13-for-29) but were better by Charleston Southern’s 50 percent (11-for-22).

Charleston Southern jumped out to an early four point led, 46-42, midway through the second half on made three pointer by Bryant only to see CCU fight back to take a lead its own on a made three from senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) 49-48. A lay-up by junior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) gave Coastal a 57-52 lead and capped off a 15-6 run for CCU. It would be the largest lead CCU would enjoy before seeing the Lady Buccaneers storm back to take a 58-57 lead on two made free throws from Bryant.

A layup by Turner gave the Lady Chants a 59-58 lead with 1:56 remaining in the game. Charleston Southern would tie on the game at 59 on a made free throw from junior Erica McCoy setting by an interesting last minute.

Charleston Southern’s Bryant again made the a big shot with a layup with :48 seconds remain to put the Bucs up 61-59 only to be answered by Dill’s layup with :28 seconds left.

Charleston Southern’s Bryant once again was called upon and once again delivered as her layup with :06 seconds remaining gave the Buccaneers a 63-61 lead.

A three pointer by Coastal junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood (Okaloosa C.C.)) rimmed out and the follow up shot by Brown went all the way around the hoop before falling to the floor.

Coastal will be the seventh seed in the upcoming 2004 Advanced Auto Parts Big South Tournament and will travel to High Point, N.C., to take on the High Point Panthers Tuesday, Mar. 8 at 7 p.m.
