Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Charleston Southern More Information:
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior Meagen Johnson (Georgetown, S.C/Georgetown (Furman)) threw a two-hit shutout in the first game and had three hits in the second game, as Coastal Carolina softball team (19-18) swept both games of its doubleheader over Charleston Southern (15-34), 7-0 and 6-0 on Saturday, April 16 at Buccaneer Field in Charleston, S.C.
The CCU offense took charge early in the first game, as sophmore Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) and junior Johnson walked to lead off the second inning. Junior Sara Hostetler (Albuquerque, N.M.) sacrificed both runners over one base. Catcher Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granada) walked to load the bases. Freshman Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo/Air Academy) followed by hitting a rocket single up the middle that plated Cillis. A single by Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs/ Colo./Air Academy) scored Johnson. Junior Delane Grainger (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chapparral (Phoenix College) reached on fielder choice as Feely scored CCU's third and final run of the frame on a throwing error.
The Chants offense was again on the attack in the fifth, a one out single by Hostetler put a runner on first. Hostetler proceed to steal second base and came in to score the fourth run on another Buccaneers' error A two-out single by Grainger brought home Coastal fifth run of the game as Feely scored.
Coastal added two more runs in the sixth inning, as freshman Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle's Landing) tripled to open the frame. After a Cillis walk, Johnson two-run double to left center to drive in final two runs of the game for Coastal. For Johnson it was her second anf third RBI's of the game in 7-0 Coastal victory.
Johnson pitched a fantastic game in picking up her fourth win of the season, only giving up two single in throwing her second shutout of the season.
Junior Brittany Nelson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) continued the strong pitching for the Lady Chants in the second game, as she also threw a complete game shutout in which she only allowed five hits, struck out nine while, not walking anybody in picking up her team-leading 12th win of the season.
Hitting stars for Coastal in the 6-0 victory include Cantrell, who had two RBI's, Johnson with her three hits, Ashley Gerdts with two hits and Hostetler who scored three runs.
Coastal's softball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 19 as they welcome in College of Charleston for a remake double headers starting at 3 p.m.
