CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina's track and field team had a strong meet at the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 2, on the campus of UNC-Charlotte.
Junior throwers Brittany Reid (McKinney, Texas/Rowlett (Coffeyville JC)) and Tamara Bryant (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle (Moorpark CC)) continued their standout outdoor seasons by placing fifth and seventh in the discus. The duo also finished fourth and sixth in the hammer throw, respectively. Other Coastal throwers that placed in the top 10 for the Chanticleers include freshman Sylvia Galarza (Millville, N.J./Millville) who placed sixth in the discus and sophomore thrower Jessica Pressley (Mullins, S.C./Mullins) who placed seventh in the hammer.
Sophomore jumper Chasity Johnson (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) placed second in the long jump (5.85m/19'2.50"). Freshman Christina Mohr (Ulmen, Germany/Geischwister-Scholl-Gymnasium) also placed second in the 1,500m for Coastal with team season-best 4:43.10. Senior Kim Nemergut (Youngstown, Ohio/South Range) finished seventh in the 1,500m for the Lady Chanticleers.
Freshman Felisha Jacobs (Darlington, S.C./Lamar) finished in the top ten in two events for Coastal, as she finished fifth in the 400m hurdles and seventh in the 100m hurdles. Sophomore Claudia Witte (Warlin, Germany/Sportgymnasium Neubrandenburg) had a fourth place finish for the Chants in the 3,000m.
Sophomore Eileen Wicker (Quinton, Va./New Kent) and junior Jessica Goeden (Grand Rapids. Mich./Grand Rapids) swept the first two places in the 2,000m steeplechase for the Coastal women.
For the men, senior Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary) had an individual victory for CCU in the 2,000m steeplechase. Other standouts from the men include fellow senior Kendall White (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast) who had a fifth place finish in the 400m hurdles. Distance runners junior Nelson Oliveria (Coimbra, Portugal/Quinta das Flores) and sophomore Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) had a second place and a third place finish in the 1,500 meters with season-best times of 3:56.65 and 3:56.88, respectively.
Jumper Taylor McFadden (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) finished fourth in the high jump with a 1.90m/6'2.75" for the Chanticleers.
As a group the Coastal 3,000m hurdlers were outstanding with all four placing in the top ten. Junior Johnny Mitchell (Duncan, S.C./Byrnes) finished fourth, freshmen Blair Paul (Queenston, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) and Jake Morris (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) finished sixth and seventh and junior Mark Heidecker (Waterford, Pa./Cathedral Prep (Thiel)) finished eighth for the Chanticleers.
Coastal Carolina's track and field program will be returning home next weekend as it host the Chanticleer Classic on Saturday, Apr. 9.
