Box Score Baseball Completes Sweep with 4-3 Win over Charleston Southern More Information:
Senior Chris Todd (Seattle, Wash./Bellevue C.C.) hit a sacrifice fly with one out, scoring junior Kevin Entsminger (Canton, Mich./College of the Siskiyous) and giving the 25th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (37-11, 16-2 Big South) a 4-3 win over Charleston Southern University (23-23, 8-13 Big South) May 8 in Conway, S.C. With the win, Coastal swept the three-game series over the Buccaneers.
Entsminger led off the ninth with a walk from Charleston Southern reliever Nino Fasulo. Sophomore Josh Eachues (Newberry, S.C./Newberry) then was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Senior Jon Foisy (Ridgecrest, Calif./Cerro Coso C.C.) sacrificed both runners over, setting up Todd’s heriocs.
Coastal scored a run in the first when junior Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) took Ryan Sowers’ first pitch over the right field wall. It was his ninth home run of the season. It also extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
The Buccaneers tied the game in the third. Jay Reynolds walked to open the inning. He went to third on consecutive groundouts and scored on a single from Justin Fyle. Coastal untied the game in the bottom of the inning. Eachues walked, moved to second on a sacrifice from Foisy, went to third on a failed pickoff from catcher Keith Stewart and scored when Graham Maiden’s throw to home was wide on a Todd grounder.
Charleston Southern led 3-2 after the top of the fifth. Billy Dalton singled to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice. Fyle singled up the middle, scoring Dalton and tying the game. Senior Byron Binda (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) then came in for junior Kevin Salmon (Brentwood, N.Y./Briarcliffe C.C.) and enduced Brian Sole into a flyout. Jordan Haar walked to put runners on first and second and Fyle scored on a single from Brad Woods.
Coastal would tie the game on a hustle play in the seventh. Sophomore Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) singled with two outs. Costanzo then doubled to right center and Duggan came all the way around from first to score.
Binda earned the win on Senior Day, improving his record to 7-1 on the year. He went 4.2 innings, giving up only two hits and striking out four. Salmon went 4.1 innings, giving up three runs and five hits with one strikeout.
Fasulo took the loss despite not giving up a hit. Sowers went eight innings, striking out seven and allowing eight hits and two earned runs.
Duggan went 3-for-4, while Costanzo had two hits and two runs batted in. For Charleston Southern, Maiden and Fyle had two hits apiece.
Coastal will be on the road for the next eight games, travelling to Atlanta, Ga., to face sixth-ranked Georgia Tech Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. The game will be webcast on www.GoCCUSports.com with Matt Hogue on the call.
