Box Score 2 Volleyball Defeats Charleston Southern in Big South Opener More Information:
CONWAY, SC - The Lady Chanticleers won their first Big South Conference contest in four games on their home court in Kimbel Arena Wednesday night. CCU faced the Lady Buccaneers of Charleston Southern. Game scores were: 30-27, 30-18, 23-30, and 30-26. Coastal Carolina is now 5-6, 1-0 in the Big South Conference and Charleston Southern has fallen to 4-7, 0-1, in the Big South.
Katherine Jensen-Spencer (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary/Mississippi) led the way for the Lady Chanticleers with 29 kills and 29 digs. Jensen-Spencer also tallied three aces for CCU. Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) added 60 assists to the Lady Chanticleers victory. Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley ) added a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy ) also added 11 kills for CCU.
Leading the Lady Buccaneers of Charleston Southern was Victoria Owens with 21 kills and 17 digs. Katie O'Riordan also helped Charleston Southern's effort with eight kills and eight digs.
Charleston Southern outhit the Lady Chanticleers in the first game with a hitting percentage of .410, CCU had a hitting percentage of .405. The Lady Buccaneers were down 2-0 in game scoring and came back in the thrid game to force the four game match. The Lady Chanticleers averaged more kills and digs in the fourth game than the Lady Buccaneers. Overall, CCU out hit the Lady Buccaneers with a final hitting percentage of .283, Charleston Southern had an overall .268 hitting percentage.
CCU will travel to UNC Wilmington and face the Seahawks September 27 at 7 p.m.
