Box Score Volleyball Defeats Birmingham-Southern In Four Games More Information:
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Coastal Carolina's volleyball team defeated Birmingham-Southern in their second Big South Conference contest of the season, winning in four games with scores of: 26-30, 30-26, 30-22, and 30-28. CCU is now 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the Big South Conference, while Birmingham-Southern fell to 7-8 and 0-2 in league play.
Senior Katherine Jensen-Spencer (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary/Mississippi) recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 19 kills and 12 digs. Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) added 48 assists for the Lady Chants in their victory. Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs.
CCU was out hit by Birmingham-Southern in the first game as the Panthers had a hitting percentage of .182, the Lady Chants had a hitting percentage of .122. Leading the way for the Panthers was Jana Smiley recording a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs. Stephanie Serna added 14 kills in the Panthers effort. BSU recorded a total of nine aces during the match, CCU recorded six.
BSC jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth game before Coastal came back to tie it up, 4-4, and the teams played to four more ties before the Lady Chants took a 6-1 run to go up, 14-9. BSC followed suit with its own 6-1 run to tie things up at 15-15, and the teams played to seven more ties down the stretch before Coastal won, 30-28, on a kill from Jensen-Spencer.
CCU out blocked BSU with 14 team blocks, while the Panthers tallied six. Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) tallied eight blocks for the Lady Chants.
The Lady Chants had an overall hitting percentage of .215, while BSU's overall average was .129.
CCU will travel to UNC Asheville for a 2 p.m. match Sunday.
