Box Score Women's Soccer Defeats The Citadel 4-0 More Information:
Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had two goals and the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (3-1) scored three goals in a 4:44 span to defeat The Citadel (2-3) 4-0 Sept. 6 at the CCU Soccer Field.
Coastal outshot the Bulldogs 19-2 in the first half, but The Citadel kept the score to 1-0 after 45 minutes. Monroe took a deflected shot from senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) and put it past Brit Bunnell for her fourth goal of the season at 19:10. Bunnell had eight saves in the first 45 minutes, including a save of a Monroe penalty shot. Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) made the start, but it was freshman Rachael Hardison (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Valley) who made Coastal’s first half save.
The Citadel kept the score 1-0 until Coastal broke it open at the end. At 79:05, Monroe took a great pass from junior Leah Hackmann (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and headed it past Angie Ellenwood to make it 2-0. Senior Kristina Fisher (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove) then scored her second goal of the year, beating Ellenwood to the left side, with an assist from Monroe. Fifty seconds later, Parsons collected a rebound and scored to build a 4-0 lead. It was Parsons’ first goal of the season and the 26th of her career. Coastal outshot the Bulldogs 11-3 in the second half.
Stoll earned the win in goal for the Lady Chanticleers. Ellenwood had four second-half saves for The Citadel.
For the game, Coastal had a 30-5 shot advantage and a 5-0 corner-kick advantage. Parsons had eight shots to lead CCU, while Monroe had five.
The Lady Chants are now 3-0 against Southern Conference teams and have won two in a row versus Southern opponents.
Coastal takes to the road for the first time this season Friday, Sept. 9, at the JU/Best Western Invitational. The Lady Chants face Stetson at 2 p.m., in Jacksonville, Fla.
