Box Score Women's Basketball Falls to Liberty 70-61

The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (9-4, 0-2 Big South) had an eight-point first-half lead on defending Big South champion Liberty University (10-4, 2-0 Big South), but the Lady Flames shot 45.5 percent from the field and went on a couple of runs in each half to defeat the Lady Chanticleers 70-61 Jan. 16 in Lynchburg, Va.   Liberty scored the first five points of the game, but Coastal would cut it to 7-6 on a three-pointer from senior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) at 14:42.  Coastal would take its first lead at 13:35 as senior Jasmine Tyler’s (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.) jumper gave CCU a 10-9 advantage.  A jumper from senior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) and a three from senior Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman) gave CCU a 17-9 lead at 11:45.  After five straight Liberty points, Rose hit a jumper to put Coastal up 19-14 at 10:10.  The Lady Flames would score the next seven points, capped by a three from Molly Frazee, but Coastal tied it at 21 on a Turner score.  Coastal led by four (28-24) on a jumper from junior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) at 4:12, but would only score one more point in the first half.  Megan Frazee hit a jumper at 1:52 and Rachel Hammond hit a three with 31 seconds left to give LU a 35-29 halftime advantage.   Turner led Coastal with eight points and six rebounds, going 4-of-7 from the field.  Young added six points.  Megan Frazee led Liberty with nine points in the first 20 minutes.  Both teams shot well in the first frame.  Coastal shot 41.4 percent, while the Lady Flames were at 46.9 percent.   Liberty pushed the lead to double digits at 17:42 on two Hammond free throws, but Coastal cut the lead to 40-37 at 15:45 on a Turner jumper.  The Lady Chants would not score until a Rose layup at 9:36, falling behind 45-39. Molly Frazee then hit a three and Moriah Frazee went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to put Liberty up 49-39 at 8:34.  A Turner layup at 6:26 made it 51-45, but four points from Moriah Frazee bumped the lead back to 10 at 5:26.  Coastal cut the lead to seven late on eight points from Rose, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Flames.   Rose had a game-high 19 points, which included two three-pointers and five free throws.  Turner added 14 points and nine rebounds to go along with two blocked shots.  Young was the third CCU player in double figures, scoring 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range.   Courtney Watkins and Moriah Frazee led Liberty with 12 points apiece.  Karoli Piotrkiewicz added nine rebounds.   Coastal shot 35.5 percent from the floor, going only 10-of-33 from the field in the second half.  The Lady Chants had 16 assists on 22 field goals, led by sophomore C.J. Ware’s (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) four.  Liberty shots 45.5 percent from the floor and outrebounded CCU 48-34.   Coastal will return to Kimbel Arena to face UNC Asheville Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m.  The game can be heard on THE TEAM 93.9 FM in Myrtle Beach.   NOTES:  Turner and Dill became the first and second CCU players to foul out this season.  Turner fouled out at 2:41, while Dill was fouled out with 33 seconds remaining… Turner was one rebound short of her fourth career double-double… Liberty played the final 17:42 without Megan Frazee, who was injured on a foul.  Frazee leads the Big South in points and rebounds per game… Coastal had only 12 turnovers, while forcing Liberty into 15 miscues.
