The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (9-4, 0-2 Big South) had an eight-point first-half lead on defending Big South champion Liberty University (10-4, 2-0 Big South), but the Lady Flames shot 45.5 percent from the field and went on a couple of runs in each half to defeat the Lady Chanticleers 70-61 Jan. 16 in Lynchburg, Va. Megan Frazee hit a jumper at 1:52 and Rachel Hammond hit a three with 31 seconds left to give LU a 35-29 halftime advantage. Turner led Coastal with eight points and six rebounds, going 4-of-7 from the field. Young added six points. Megan Frazee led Liberty with nine points in the first 20 minutes. Both teams shot well in the first frame. Coastal shot 41.4 percent, while the Lady Flames were at 46.9 percent. Liberty pushed the lead to double digits at 17:42 on two Hammond free throws, but Coastal cut the lead to 40-37 at 15:45 on a Turner jumper. The Lady Chants would not score until a Rose layup at 9:36, falling behind 45-39. Molly Frazee then hit a three and Moriah Frazee went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to put Liberty up 49-39 at 8:34. A Turner layup at 6:26 made it 51-45, but four points from Moriah Frazee bumped the lead back to 10 at 5:26. Coastal cut the lead to seven late on eight points from Rose, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Flames. Rose had a game-high 19 points, which included two three-pointers and five free throws. Turner added 14 points and nine rebounds to go along with two blocked shots. Young was the third CCU player in double figures, scoring 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range.
