Women’s Basketball Travels to Utah for Road Contest with BYU

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina women's basketball will take on BYU in their first-ever trip to Utah on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN+ as well as the Chanticleer Sports Network.
 
ABOUT THE CHANTS
  • Coastal dropped their first game of the season 63-53 to Miami (OH) on Monday night at the HTC Center.
  • The Chants faced a deficit of 21 late in the third quarter before going on a 10-0 run to close out the period down 50-39.
  • Tessa Grady knocked down a three with 4:45 left to cut the lead down to 53-49. The RedHawks followed by scoring 10 of the next 14 points to close out the victory.
  • It was Coastal's first home-opening loss since 2004 when they fell 77-74 to Anderson, led by current CCU head coach Kevin Pederson.
  • In her first game with the Chants, Tessa Grady led the team in scoring with 13 points on 5-11 shooting (3-9 3pt). Tateyoina Harris grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Coastal on the boards.
  • Coastal Carolina is coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2024-25, going 23-9 (12-6 SBC) and reaching the semifinals of the Sun Belt tournament and WNIT for the first time in program history. 
  • Coastal's 23 wins last season were the second-most in program history behind their 25 wins in 2019-20. The Chants hit 240 3-pointers throughout the campaign, a new program record. 
  • Leading the 3-point charge last season was Kristin Williams, who led the Sun Belt with 82 made 3-pointers. Williams was named to the preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team. 
  • After finishing fourth in the Sun Belt last season, the Chants were picked sixth in the preseason coaches poll, their highest preseason ranking since 2020.
  • The Chanticleers welcome 10 new players to the team in 2025-26, with three freshmen and seven transfers.
 
ABOUT THE COUGARS
  • BYU is led by first-year head coach Lee Cummard, a former player for the Cougars from 2005-09, earning the 2008 MWC Player of the Year.
  • BYU finished last season 13-17 and 4-14 in Big 12 play.
  • Sophomore guard Delaney Gibb returns after leading the Cougars in scoring last season at 17.4 points per game. She was named to the 2025-26 Naismith Women's Player of the Year Preseason Watchlist along with Unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 honors.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • The Chants and Cougars will be meeting for the first time.
  • Coastal has played two Big 12 teams previously, losing to Baylor 72-53 on Dec. 30, 1988 and also falling to Iowa State 77-61 on Dec. 20, 1994.
 
NEW NAMES, BIG IMPACTS
  • Making their Coastal Carolina debuts. Tessa Grady and Tateyoina Harris emerged as impact players for the Chants in the opener against Miami (OH).
  • Grady led the team in scoring and hit some key shots down the stretch, finishing with 13 points while adding a pair of steals.
  • Harris grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds with seven being offensive in her debut.
 
LATE NIGHT CHANTS
  • Coastal's game with BYU in Provo, Utah tips off at 9:00 p.m. ET, 7:00 p.m. MST. 
  • This will be the Chant's latest tip-off time in terms of ET since Dec. 21, 2023 against Michigan State, which started at 9:30 p.m. ET in Cherokee, N.C.
 
COASTAL CHAOS
  • Head Coach Kevin Pederson coined the term "Coastal Chaos" prior to last season due to his philosophy of tough defense and forcing teams to be uncomfortable.
  • The stats backed up the chaotic defense, as the Chants led the Sun Belt with 20.3 turnovers forced per game and ranked second in steals per game with 10.88.
