More Information:

BIRMINGHAM, ALA.- The Coastal Carolina Volleyball team (5-18, 1-6) fell in five games to Birmingham-Southern (7-13, 4-3) Sunday, October 15. The game scores were 43-41, 26-30, 19-30, 31-29 and 10-15.

Both teams set a school and Big South Record in most points scored in a game since the rally scoring was instituted in 2001. The 43-41 game beat the previous record held by Charleston Southern from earlier in the season.

The Lady Panthers jumped out to an early 15-9 lead in game one off of three kills from both Morgan Anderson and Michelle Maciejewski. After a Coastal timeout, the Lady Chanticleers went on a 12-5 run to take the lead 26-25 thanks to the serving arm of junior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington). Thompson got help from seniors Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) who each had a kill, three Birmingham-Southern errors and a service ace. The two teams then battled for each point switching the lead several times before Thompson had a big kill putting the ball in freshman libero Megan Pollard's (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) hands to serve. Pollard took advantage of a Lady Panther attack error before another Maciewjewski kill brought BSC within one at 40-41. However, Thompson put down a picture perfect set from Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and then served an ace to get the win, 43-41. Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) led the Coastal offense with five kills in the game. The Lady Panthers were led by Sarah Harris who had six kills.

Game two was another close one with Birmingham Southern getting the win 30-26. The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 19-9 lead and never looked back. Despite a big seven kill game from freshman Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and Coastal's highest hitting percentage of the match (.250), the Lady Chanticleers couldn't stop the arms of Harris and Casey Demos who had five and four kills, respectively.

Birmingham-Southern jumped out to another quick lead 20-13 before going on a 10-6 run to get the victory, 30-19. The Lady Panthers took advantage of 11 Coastal errors and a .064 hitting percentage in the game. Thompson and Nyhof each had four kills for the Lady Chanticleers while Demos and Maciejewski had three apiece.

Coastal matched the Lady Panthers point-for-point in game four until falling behind 26-28 causing Head Coach Kristen Bauer to take a timeout. The Lady Chanticleers came back firing taking the lead off of two consecutive BSC errors and a Rinne kill. Thompson came up big again for the Lady Chanticleers getting a kill to make it 30-29. Thompson then served the game-winning point off of a Lady Panther error giving Coastal the win, 31-29.

The two teams again matched each other point-for-point until Milica Stojanovic took the ball to serve for the Lady Panthers putting them ahead 11-8. Coastal tried to battle back but couldn't catch up and lost the game 15-10.

Coastal was led by Nyhof who had a career-best 22 kills with a .255 hitting percentage. Tracey and Pollard also had a career-high afternoon. Pollard scooped up 36 digs and Tracey had 71 assists in the match. Thompson had her ninth double-double of the year, having 15 kills and 24 digs. Obert and Scheible also had strong performances tallying 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Rinne ended the day with nine kills and 10 digs.

The Lady Panthers were led by Harris who ended the night with 21 kills and 13 digs. Maciejewski added 17 kills and 13 digs. Demos also had double digits in kills with 15. Alex Norten and Stojanovic had double-digit digs having 24 and 13 digs, respectively.

The Lady Panthers are back in action on Saturday, October 21 when they host Big Conference foe High Point at 2 p.m. The Lady Chanticleers are back at home in Kimbel Arena to take on Liberty Friday, October 20. That match is set for 7 p.m.
