CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (10-4-1, 4-2 Big South) fell to Charleston Southern University (4-9-2, 1-5 Big South) 2-0 Oct. 18 in Charleston, S.C.

Charleston Southern had a goal wiped away on an offsides call in the 17th minute, but then made one count at 29:53 as an Alyssa Clay header into the right side of the goal gave the Lady Bucs a 1-0 lead. Clay was assisted on a cross by Caitlin Gunyan. Coastal had only one shot on goal in the first half, but sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had the team’s best chance to score in the 30th minute when she hit the crossbar with her shot.

The two teams had six shots apiece in the first half, with the Lady Buccaneers earning all four corner kicks. Stoll and CSU’s Mia Cederholm had one save apiece.

Coastal had more chances in the second half, including a shot by junior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) that went just wide left, but the Lady Bucs would capitalize in the 88th minute. CSU received a corner kick and Emma Mattsson crossed to Sarah Catenacci, who headed it home for the 2-0 final score.

Coastal outshot CSU 15-13, but the Lady Bucs had a 6-1 corner-kick advantage. Stoll had two saves for the Lady Chanticleers, while Cederholm had three saves for CSU.

Monore led Coastal with six shots, while Humphries had five.

Coastal failed to score for the first time in the last nine games and were shut out for the first time in Big South play.

Coastal hosts UNC Asheville Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., as the Lady Chanticleers will honor their eight seniors before the match.
